Thread regarding Optum layoffs

a poem to Optum Leadership

Going to work used to be fun.
You could always find a laugh with someone.

We worked long and hard for our members.
I'm not sure if Leadership remembers.

For the special, for the elderly, for the parents, for the sick--
if you needed it done, we got it out quick.

Approvals and medicines and mental health care
were top of our minds--not the market cost of a share.

Call centers, doctors, analysts, ...unite!
We wanted to help them and together, we might.

But somewhere, things started to go wrong.
It was subtle--here and there--for so long.

It was always sad to lose someone you know.
But the company's success needed to grow.

Then things started to tilt and to shift and to sour.
It's hard to look on and not let yourself feel dour.

It seemed buying more companies was always 'swipe right'.
And despite all the profits, the budget got TIGHT.

But buying a broken company is problematic.
And the security breach was very dramatic.

Why update the software to something first-rate?
It's working for now and there's a lot on our plate.

So cross your fingers and hope for the best.
It probably won't be targeted to test.

Oh, it did? Well now we have to pay.
It's not like it will cost jobs, anyway.

Oh, it did? Well, it's important to to note
that we're all in this together--in the same boat.

"Yes, many were affected, but it's important we say
that it's a hard day for everyone today."

So despite the vast revenue that ends with a 'B'--
that's "billions", and yes, that's quarterly--

we'll fire thousands of people with a call not a letter
and we'll call them "affected" because it sounds better.

To the rest, who look like they su-ked on a lime,
we'll nod undersatndingly, and offer some time.

But then it's time to get in gear and back to work!
The workload's the same and there's nothing to shirk.

So what if your team of ten is now two?
It's not like you're bored and having nothing to do.

Hop to it! And be grateful for your perks.
We have no time to continue the waterworks.

We avoid burnout in our employees if we can,
but there's always Plan B, the contingency plan.

We'll announce a company-wide fireside chat.
We'll rouse up morale and that'll be that.

We'll wait a few months for the ire to fade.
And that's when the new round of "affected" will be made.

What's amazing is that no matter where you are at UHG, everyone has the same story.

We work our butts off, sacrifice the work/life balance, understand that 'well, I didn't eat today because I couldn't get away from my desk but its fine', and keep GIVING to an org that can't manage their people or money. I lost good friends and coworkers who were damn good employees in this layoff.

Super great timing, with another employee survey hitting in May! Expecting GREAT results.......

Optum hasn't been like that since 2000 - after Edward Bergmark & his leadership were replaced with corporate bottom line people and Optum expanded and integrated. The leadership who had backgrounds in nursing and counseling are long gone people...and hiring Target leaders to commoditize our members set the company into a scramble of rotating leadership who never were around long enough to keep a direction to results. Constant churn, lack of accountability, and continual biting the UHC hand that feeds us will continue until there is new leadership at the top. It could have been different.

Spot on, every word. I’m looking at this as my chance to find a company like we once were. One that I believe in the mission being the reality, where the patient is what matters first. I’m shocked, heartsick and dismayed. Too bad 2 weeks prior I turned down an opportunity because of the loyalty I felt to my leaders, my team and my patients. That will teach me to prioritize anything above me ever again. Shame on you United because we were anything but. How many lives did you destroy in one day? Back to working for a small company with a soul. So long to the giants with only loyalty to the investors. May every one of the complicit individuals in leadership have to step down from on high and off the bench to put your actual blood sweat and tears into your jobs the way we did. I will be back, better, stronger and more amazing than ever, you on the other hand, not so much.

Sad to say this is just another UHG toddler temper tantrum by no other than the leadership. Boo hoo Medicare only gonna pay us 1percent not the 22 percent we are use too. Well we will show you. We going to cut services cause there no money to pay for them ( 8 billion profit) 450 billion dollar company) 84 million to old Steven ( board chairman) hence layoff the staff. How dare they Health and Human Services do that. I was planning to do great things with that money for the members ( buy myself a yacht, add more to my castle).
