Having found a job after 6 months, I am only making 53% of what I made at my last place.
Anything that can be done remotely, can be done cheaper so the ride is over I think.

“What exactly is your job? “
Developer mostly. Started with C (but maintained Fortran and Pascal also) then did Java ( when EJB and three tier got you $$) then moved to db administration for oracle. I learned Golang and Rust on the side but can’t break in to the SRE line of work.
Without the legacy maintenance work, I won’t be here.
“Is it so hard out there?“
If you are 50+ yes. Unless you want to work for a lot less which is doable if you don’t have kids.
There is too much emphasis on AI, like I have said many times before, AI with cr-ppy software is still cr-ppy software. AI replacing sales, solution engineering, consulting is still an organisation that will be difficult to work with.
AI is augmentative, it will add no more than 5-10% productivity, and the people running to work on AI program/projects will find their skills will be as useful as those who ran towards the Blockchain craze.
AI is a blackbox, it will be open source, it will enhance existing Apps, there will be no special skillset required, if you work in CRM today, you will work in CRM tomorrow, if you work in ERP today, it will still be in ERP tomorrow and so on.
I think SAP knows this, current transformation is just an excuse to layoff people over 50 and reduce a concentration of core group that are too expensive to maintain.
Suggestive action is to maintain your CV, open channels to recruiters and be open to monetise your your deep experience and knowledge
My opinion, let the low cost areas to the work, if they can. I learned as a child, that you will get what you paid for in the end. Low cost work, low cost result, low cost customers. Good luck with all this SAP.
