heard directly from my senior leader that Optum let go around 20,000 people across the org.

Has anyone heard of more layoffs in January 2025 and what departments may be affected?
I too completely dislike the positive 2nd Quarter announcement being followed up by this latest round of layoffs. I began working with WellMed 7 years ago as part of the project management process. We always stressed how each project would help improve the patient experience and / or make folks working in the clinics or back office facilities do their job better. That was our 'guiding light'. We stayed profitable by focusing on our patients and employees. I miss those days. Optum / UHG are focused only on the bottom line. Yes, we need to be profitable but this latest round of layoffs include shutting down clinics. That is a complete opposite of putting the patient first! I am close to retiring so hope I still have a job in about a year that I can retire from.
Just been acquired by Optum, after seeing posts, I am afraid! Saw a retention agreement draft and my name wasn't on it!
Yep I was just laid off and called people to mandatory meetings. Had two sessions the first group which I was in. Had a recording come on to say we are no longer needed as of that day. We are terminated no warning absolutely ridiculous how they treat her employees always preaching about patient care and everything but then you close offices with no warnings leaving patience outside With a note on the door saying they are closed
I was let go August of 2023 and it's a fairly standard severance based on years of employment. I guess you could try to fight it, but would probably take a lot of time. The problem with UHG and other big corporations is that they seem to get the news media out of reporting any layoffs. They stagger them to get around the WARN act, and then they keep up the company posts on social media about what a great company it is to work for them. Add in some CEO cheerleading at the quarterly release meetings, and there you have it.
I’m wondering if they mean 20K total from when these lay offs “kicked off”, not just last week. I was told by my V mid year 2023 UHG would be downsizing 15-20% total throughout 2023-2024
Does anyone know if clinical services was affected?
Hi! I'm curious to know how many among those laid off had significant medical expenses (e.g. cancer treatment), or had filed for FMLA or in the weeks before the layoff? (for your own illness, maternity leave, or to care for an ill family member)?
My department Optum Payment Integrity laid off 31 people yesterday. Just spoke with a coworker from my previous department in Quality and they too had layoffs. 20k sounds high, but considering how much money was paid out for the ransom it must be recovered somewhere.
That must be only a division of Optum. Optum employs over 150k worldwide. At least that’s the number the publish. I’m in Optum Home and Comminty and SCC got hit very hard.
I work in Comms. We employ 520,000 individuals as of Q1 Earnings.
I heard it was 25,000
I heard it was 3,500.
They offered VTO yesterday and today, up to 30 people each day went home early.
Has anyone had any success negotiating a larger severance?
Yes, true as of 4/18/24, I work there. Sad day.
They don’t have to do the WARN act and this how they get away with their layoffs all the time, we’re all part of sub entities of Optum unless you work directly for big Optum you’re usually in a sub entity OptumRx, OptumServe, Optum360 etc. i just love how the fire side chat Andrew boasted all this positive BS knowing Thursday was dooms day for others! For all of you that were affected just know this was the plan for you to move on to bigger and better things, count your blessings and take your severance and start looking now!
Probably that many but doing it in increments…
There were many layoffs! some of us were totally blindsided. We were told we were safe many times, then out of the blue we get cut. many of us with years of experience, poured our hearts into our jobs and got cut by someone we don’t ever talk to in a large group meeting where we were muted and unable to chat or ask questions. when united bought LM they sold their soul to the devil!
I was laid off today but I doubt that the number is 20k. That would trigger the Warn Act in many states and the media would have reported on it.
Covers the cost of the hack and adds a little change for shareholders for good measure.
How the he-l is uhg a top employer on linkedin...who makes those decisions. Do they know what a cluster this company is?? Do some research!
Can confirm. OBH got hit today, laid off whole team of data specialists for provider data updates.
UHG's total workforce is ~200,000. that means we lost around 10% in one day.

Optum has more than double that # of employees.
So the HR person who posted last week was right!
Word has gone out at the company and team members that are left are being notified. However, 20K is a very large number given that Optum employs +/- 70k.
