OP, they're about to be laid off and replaced by indians. That simple. Whenever the company gives you the title of advisor it means that you've been told in a subtle way you should be looking for another job. You're good for a couple of years but your career at Exxon is over.

The "Advisor" title is the d-mbest this company has come up with. You won't see this title is other big companies. Our titles are non-standards which make other companies guess what they really are. Advisor roles are the most useless IMO. They should be removed.

Your comments about age is the biggest problems we face at ExxonMobil. The sh- is sad and you're probably someone in management. Somebody between the ages of 30-35 can have valid experience to be an Advisor. However it honestly depends on the Advisor role. I've seen a person graduate from college as a Environmental Engineer and be hired on as a Environmental Advisor. The individual had excellent knowledge of regulations (better than a lot of experienced folks) and excelled in that role.

Stop focusing on age. You're never too old to learn and never too young to lead. A sper- learns how to catch/find an egg with no prior experience.

That can’t really be your title. If it is, I’m sorry. Especially if it was presented as career advancement. Gtfo while you can , before everyone tries to get out at the same time

So my title 'Assistant to the Advisor' isn't much of a career advance. I suspected that.

It makes them feel important and that big in that culture

In IT, there are a fair number of GBC sycophants that were promoted rapidly to supervisor/manager positions. Some of them have been found to be not so great once their sponsors retired, hence being put out to pasture in advisor positions.

I think it’s that advisor is code for useless. It’s not a flattering job title, at XOM or anywhere really except maybe in government. So I think OP is wondering why we’re foisting that title on promising/ambitious youth especially given the widely known internal stigma

Advisor is a valid name for a senior specialist position with 7 - 12 years of experience in the company. what's your issue? or would you prefer the practice of moving advisor jobs, renaming them specialist and lowering the CL, like they used to?

Job titles are a big deal to people down there. It could also replacement of US advisors for foreign advisors. It’s happening all over Finance. Not many finance jobs in the U.S. pretty soon going forward.

Advisor in your role means you're up for elimination

Any role with Advisor in it is little more than an unnecessary position created to maintain headcount. Nil added value from those individuals because the role usually has no purpose. Time only devoted therefore to justifying their own existence and managing their own individual career.

Cuz I thought Advisor was reserved for the dangerously incompetent 52 year-old former mid-managers being belatedly put to pasture. It’s fun to watch them learn Excel for the first time :)
