@5ofl+1s6L0vvu, do you really believe the layoff is because of AI investment? I can tell you, it is not. Nobody lays off the team if the division is working on a profitable product or service. The layoff is to cut operational costs and cover their bad strategy with this id--tic excuse of "AI investments" while they have over 115 billion in cash. Google is behind AI and will be for the next decade. People are realizing Google is like any other company; when the crises come, they fire people. Simple like that.

This is NOT because of an increase in productivity due to AI, it is because Google sc--wed up and got behind the ball on AI and they need to invest heavily to get the market share for AI or perish. So, jobs are being sacrificed to build up AI, NOT because AI is already so productive or outworking workers.

It just so happens that Google also has a gadzillion layers of middle managers that can bear the brunt fairly easily without damaging core services. So really, this is a two birds, one stone thing.

But the main blame is Google leadership who failed to invest the right resources and people in AI development the first time around and marketing who can't help but just rename products and coast on the Google name alone.

the increase in productivity caused by AI

Which increase in productivity? Is there any evidence besides Google next Gemini 45% of developer satisfaction not substantiated by facts?

Google still got too much fat and strong culture of coasting. They can wack dozens of thousands of employees now that morale is gone and see no difference in productivity. Please stop using gen AI as an argument if you understand how it works.

In addition to the increase in productivity caused by AI, it doesn't help that so many individuals demand to work from home like cry babies. It's obvious employers will continue to lay off people to gain leverage. One needs to be very naive not to understand this cause and consequence effect. I can guarantee you that people trying to find jobs will be way more flexible to come to the office five times per week, as they should.

For a large company doing layoffs is like losing virginity . Only the first time is hard and hesitant . After that it gives them or---m and they shall never stop !
