I retired early last year. Your 401k account stays open and gets funded just like every year. You can elect to leave it sit, move it or cash it out.

I guess company match happens provided you are employed at Citi as of Dec 31st of the prior year so I don’t think Citi will match those who are laid off in March 2024

2024 match will not happen till March 2025, they will leave your account open to deposit funds. Do not forget about it!

I would recommend opening a personal retirement account and rolling over the 401K to it. As people changes jobs, they may have multiple 401Ks in their lifetime. Having them consolidated into one account is simpler.

If you get let go, take your 401K with you. Don’t let it remain under the Citi umbrella and count into the bragging rights about how much money they manage. Don’t let them manage a dime of it. Move it to another investment firm.

If they drag their feet on letting it transfer out OR try to intimidate you, if you can imagine that, into leaving it with Citi, then sue them into oblivion and retire early.
