These are common at this time of year, usually done every other year.
Be careful if you give any comments or criticism of your boss...even if you ask that it not be disclosed that you made the comments...they will disclose the source to your boss.
Basically, it is just another format to tell them how wonderful they are!
Normally when they’re put on your calendar in advance, it’s because others are being notified of being let go and they want to talk to the rest of the team. How long is it? 15 minutes is a bad sign.
Being that it’s on a Thursday, when layoffs happen, I’d guess either your boss is being laid off (specially if they’re not part of the meeting) or it’s to “calm” the team because others are being laid off. Source: been through a few of these these last couple of years.
Nothing new they start these for a while nobody likes to talk so they stop. Then the next iteration they make them optional nobody takes a bite. Then they go away for a while. Then musical chairs new set of people and the game repeats. Seen this for the past 10 years
Where are you and what department?
Layoff meetings will not be set 2 days in advance. But what do I know?
Totally normal to get a skip level meeting invite. It's when you get an invite for a meeting that starts in 30 minutes or so (same day) that you can expect bad news.

Open lines of communication? Surely you jest! There is only one line of communication and it does not go from the bottom upwards.
As mentioned below, it's a meeting with your bosses boss. Our team has been briefed that we will be getting the invites soon. I've been here a year and this would be my 2nd one. In my meeting, Big Boss was just introducing herself and making an appearance. I was worried too, when I got my first invite because I've not worked for large enough companies that did this. It can be a great opportunity to open lines of communication and build rapport with upper management. If you have big questions, might also be a good time to get those addressed.
“Skip level meetings” are common actually. If they pull some junk and twist it to do a layoff meeting then that’s just pure company fashion and to be expected. Every single meeting I go into now I’m expecting a layoff ambush. So better to be prepared then not to be.
Skip Level meeting is when you talk to your boss's boss. These are fairly common.
if it’s out of the blue and they don’t happen often, and depending on duration, likely being notified you are let go
