Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Sub $1M Storage Deals email

This is an alarming development… outside of ENT there is little +$1M and it’s a very competitive landscape.

If you look at the recent earnings call, it was reported that storage revenue was 4.8 billion dollars, up 2% year over year. Double‑digit demand growth in Dell IP storage (PowerMax,PowerStore, PowerScale, ObjectScale, data protection), strong all‑flash array growth, and higher Dell IP mix improving margins. This is the way it was reported.

I am sure there are metrics that break all of this down but it seems like the general public won't see it.

Clearly you have NO IDEA

ChatGPT answer :
I don't have access to the specific details of the dataset size used for training me, but models similar to mine, like GPT-4, are often trained on datasets ranging from hundreds of gigabytes to several terabytes in size. The exact size can vary based on the diversity and scope of the data included, which typically consists of a wide array of internet text to ensure a broad understanding of language and information.

So there is few TB - and you say you want to read 100s of GB/sec ...constantly?

clearly you have never worked in the industry - you throw numbers looking to 'bigger is better' when in fact there is need for it in the usecases - typical sales S3 level or backoffice

“Looking forward to DTW this year. If we don't see a serious answer here it's time to bail.”

There’s never an answer to anything at DTW.

Curious as to why it’s later in May vs early May. Vegas booking issues or cluster from all the ongoing layoffs.

Model training runs need 100s of TB/s and Amazon/Azure and others deliver that. Sad to see Isilon stuck in 2007.

PowerStore… 3 years late and snoozefest.

PowerMax… 2008 called.

so much fake "dell" people here looking for some information or making statments they have no idea of

PowerScale with 100GB/sec throughput - you think AI needs more ? check what the ChatGPT size is ...

PowerStore - not enterprise - tell this to Pure, Netapp, IBM,HPE ..actually everyone else especially when data reduction is ON.

PowerMax - mainframe ? yes - with compression which is not even IBM that has it and bets all other when levels with HDS only

Reading analysts here - clear is these are competition sniffing for news to feed their morale

pathetic

I actually think AI will bring a number of workloads to the on-prem data center, but it won't be with Dell unless we see some major updates at DTW. DDN, IBM, and Vast all handle NVIDIA Superpod throughput at such a higher speed that it makes PowerScale look like the Aldi brand version. It's good for the money, but if you forget about the money it's actually not good.

There will also be a repatriation due to AI as companies struggle to classify data. That vulnerability will alone force some repartition so customers can get a better understanding of what data their AI tools are grabbing, but it won't be major.

PowerStore never was built for this...PowerScale can't be while on a PowerEdge chassis...PowerMax is built for Mainframe...Dell needs a new product and needs it now. PowerFlex isn't it when any 3-Tier solution is 1/2 the price from Pure, NetApp, or HPE.

Looking forward to DTW this year. If we don't see a serious answer here it's time to bail.

Hyperscalers have won the storage war. Plain and simple.

GPUs have replaced the CPU and this a new threat to the hyperscalers if they don’t adapt fast enough.

High Tech consolidation is happening at the fastest pace ever and the barrier to entry is at an all time high due to sold out supply chains.

Dell doesn’t have competitive enterprise storage anymore PowerMax has stiff competition and Powerstore isn’t enterprise.

I see Commercial with +$1M deals. In my region, it's been bad for Enterprise. Commercial is helping out. You probably don't want to say where you are. Neither do I. Good Luck.
