Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

RTO is just silly and costly affair

I honestly believe it will all fall apart in the end. I am not getting into some crazy office with bare minimum conditions, while having a significant increase in my expenses and decrease in my personal time because of the hours of commute. All of that only to be laid off in the near future. I have no chance to be promoted, no reason to expect the pay raise that would matter, so when I put everything on paper, I absolutely have no reason to stay with Dell.

t it'd be such a long commute, 2.5-3 hours a day.
that would be your personal commuting time,of course then you would need to put in a full days work

I understand Bain recommended headcount to be reduced by 33,000 employees to 100,000. Any evidence of that recommendation?

If more than 50% of your team will be at one single office you will LIKELY be denied by HR. Managers can make an initial approval but HR makes the final call.
Even if you do get approved for remote you’ll be stuck in your position and then they will likely lay you off.
In my entire team of 16, 12 them are at one single office overseas. The other 3 are at another single office in the U.S. I’m the only one who will go remote. And out of the 80 or so people I know in various roles, only 3 have said they would go remote (including myself).
I am for sure absolutely the highest paid on my team without a doubt and I am NOWHERE near an office. I am really confident I’ll either be denied remote and then let go somehow when I don’t comply, or I’ll be approved and then be laid off at a later time.

But I will assure you.. your manager will not be making the final call on this. They could advocate for you after making the initial approval.. but HR will make the final call. It says this very clearly in the policy.

Interesting that your manager said that. We have been told (at an L3 level) to approve all remote requests unless the individual is a talent concern. I'm very curious to see what really happens, as I've seen the double talk in action. So far though, no other hidden messages, etc., that I'm aware of.

@1lya+1ruzsapB, hey Sherlock, as for being monitored by HR, everyone and their aunt knows this site is open for everyone to read, that's why we all post anonymously. It's not like someone could forbid HR to read what we are saying here.

Since it's obvious detective skills aren't one of your strongest suits, let me give you a hint - if you got blocked from posting something, it's because one of your previous posts pi---d off site mods, not because of the current one.

Just bring your 4 monitors with you each day. Easy peasy! 😉

In my home office I use a dell workstation not a laptop and have 4 screens (2x24” and 2x34” widescreens) in order to do my work. My Dell laptop - which I only use as a webcam - and its tiny screen will seriously impact my productivity in an office where I am told there is limited desk space and no external monitors.

Completely nuts!

I wouldnt read to much into it. right now there is a fear campaign going against remote. all leaders were told to push hybrid.
I think its more they are afraid +50% of their employees will opt for remote.
they will renege again once the counts are in. mark my words

Last week was on a team call, manager eluded to (but wouldn't get specific) that even if they (manager) approves remote, HR may reject the request, and that part of what HR is looking at is distance from one of the first phase offices (ex: if you're 30 miles from an office and request remote, they would reject even if your manager approved). I see what the policy is, at least the policy in its current public form, the FAQ...I do wonder what corporate and HR are planning to do and NOT telling IC's. My manager "strongly recommended" we choose hybrid if we are anywhere near an office, but wouldn't state why. Are they just saying it because the company "emphasizes" hybrid, or are there further threats/actions against those who choose remote that we aren't being informed of in the policy/faq? (and for the record, I'm right on that line of distance/time where I'm somewhat near an office, but it'd be such a long commute, 2.5-3 hours a day...all the while not working with a single person in my metro area. It's utterly a waste of my time and money. I was remote pre-pandemic, hybrid will significantly cut into my productivity.)

Just curious if any managers here have anything to add, that they are being told by senior leaders, beyond what we already know...

No. They swap you out for three interchangeable work units in India.

That's exactly the conclusion they want you to have. Leave and then they swap you out with another interchangeable work unit on the spreadsheet.

Same here. Really no upside in hybrid. Mostly those on their last years to retirement will be going in to keep their jobs.
Ironically it's those they want to reduced.

That's the point - they don't want you to have a reason to stay at Dell. This is just a means of forced attrition to hit the HC goals despite the long term impact it'll have on the company.
