Hiring process at your plant

So, inquiring minds want to know - how’s the hiring practices at your facility? Do people who apply for jobs actually get an interview, or is someone who didn’t even apply hand picked by the GM? Are hiring managers allowed to “hire”?

I believe I know which plant and who we are talking about because I’ve got past experience at another plant that sounds awfully like this.

The GMs and RLT depending on job post can trump. Most don’t exercise that right all that often. I can only think of a couple who do and who they learned it from has since retired. However, if it’s who I think it is, they’ve got a powerful advocate sitting in Findlay.

I’d like to think that if this is as pervasive of an issue as being described that at some point it becomes too much of a mess for people at the top to ignore. While BI is sort of laughed at and not trusted by many, I do know that a lot of activity does get attention. The best advice I could give you, OP, is to anonymously put in a BI complaint and hope that it is taken seriously. Coming on here complaining isn’t going to fix it.

If this is really a repeat offense that just keeps happening, if enough people call it out, I’d like to think that not even a powerful player in Findlay can run interference for this person. I think I know what you’re up against and May the force be with you. This has been a long time Coming, this person has been pulling this type of thing for years.

Yeah there’s a lot of who’s related to who, but I think nepotism exists all over oil and gas and isn’t unique to marathon.

They’ve already found a way to hide two bad GMs, one last year and one just a month or so ago. I’m sure eventually the one in question will be hidden away, put out to pasture in a lateral individual contributor role with no direct reports while keeping their inflated pay grade. That is, if this one really is crazy enough to direct that their friends cousins and or brother are hired for every job posted.

GMs have always thrown their weight around from time to time with hiring. Hiring their buddies is a story as old as time and many are guilty, but that kind of interference usually isn’t happening for every job either. From what I’ve seen, most let the managers and supervisors run with it and only occasionally pull rank. If it’s happening with every job, they’ll hang themselves by being way too bold and overt. Lol. If it’s gotten to the point where a disgruntled bitter employee feels the only avenue left is shouting into the abyss of an online message board anonymously, well, that seems telling.

This place is a joke. Nepotism runs DEEP. Young jerks make the fast track and they move em around every couple years giving more and more undeserved responsibility. They talk integrity, ha that’s a joke. This company is a farce.

Thanks to the post from SPP

Business integrity has been tried for some people at plant and I don’t think it’s truly anonymous. I know some friends much braver than me who have used it recently I honestly feel safer asking here than trying to use that system. Business integrity Doesn’t seem to have made anything better same stuff just keeps happening over and over and over. Just shows me that certain folks are protected by people at the top and can do anything unchecked

I work at SPP. It is rare that the GM would intervene in hiring, unless it’s for an RLT position. For refinery dept manager jobs? Yeah, there’s a list, and yeah, you have to be willing to move or there’s no way you’ll ever make it to the manager level. Not saying it’s right, but that’s how marathon is. They place more value on relocation than skill, to be honest. As a former Andeavor employee, they also placed value on relocation, but not to the extent marathon does.

I am curious to know who and what we are exactly talking about here. This sounds like serious psycho level micromanagement to interfere with hiring In lower graded positions.

If it’s really that bad, talk to business integrity, although, without managers willing to say that they are tired of being told who to hire, I’m not sure how far you’re going to get.

Sounds terrible and I feel for you. Good luck and Godspeed

Not really about the bipoc thing. More about the person at the top forcing their picks for positions on all their subordinate leaders. Morale at the plant I work at, tanking. Heartbreaking. And no one at the very top cares enough to help us.

The metric is hires but there is an interview requirement too.

The metric is hires not interviews if you don't think women and biopic have an advantage so management can pad their bonus you're crazy.

Women and bipoc now have to contend with being the diversity interview. It is sh---y getting prepped for an interview, only to find they can’t even pretend to be interested.

Seniority matters that's why unions and others use it. Inexperienced youngsters have no bumping rights although they somehow think they are being cheated. Experience can not be bought it is earned. ILL gotten goods are dishonest and unsatisfying in the end.

9 times out of 10 it’s a joke. They already know who they want and typically it’s some legacy Findlay person who is on the “fast track list”. They don’t have to be qualified it’s just their time to move on/up. This place is a joke!
