Was planning on retiring this year after 35 years. Then was laid off instead with a nice 200K Bonus.
Thanks for a great send off reward Enbridge. Great company.

Good for you! Congrats! Enjoy the time off.
Enbridge has a horrible severance package. 200k after 35 years? Yes, it's better than nothing but it's also still a slap in the face. Did you get to keep your DB pension or was it turned into a Lira? If you lost your DB pension (paid until you die), than that 200k is nothing after 35 years. How about ur retirement benefits? Are those now gone?
No. If you believe that the severance compensation packages are "well below common law" in Canada, well, you're just straight up wrong.
You're also mixing up your complaint. You don't "share a point of view" for legality. Unless, of course, you didn't mean "law", and actually meant, "as is customary". In which case you're probably still wrong, but because you're asking for opinion, that's fine.
The severance Enbridge typically pays by default is more than triple what is "mandatory". They're litigation-averse, and would prefer to have it all go smoothly.
Pretty sure severance offers in Canada are well below common law. Anyone else sharing this view?
The difference between this and the voluntary program is that anybody "volunteering" this time would not be treated better than those being laid off without warning. The fact that they accommodated some folk's requests is good of them, but if it conflicted with their needs they would have said no. And bridging folks to retirement is typical - not unusual.
Not sure why you're complaining. Did you put your hand up and say, "As long as you're laying people off, pick me!" If you didn't, that's on you. Don't ask, don't get.
Pi---s me off that there was this unwritten supposed of hey if interested put up your hand.
This is an A-hole inappropriate way this company went about this layoff.
Wth why not just of said it in the start one could offer to go.
All they said was no VWO and all decisions were business through HR.
Ridiculous hearing that 60-70% left were retired ready and got the cash giveaways.
But unfairness is the BrokenBridge route.
As far as "See a lawyer" goes, sure. Never a bad idea, even if it's just to reassure you. I know about a dozen people who did that since 2016. And every one got the same answer. "The offer is fine. You won't do better if you challenge it."
Does anyone know how many retirees are actually enjoying the so called defined benefits pension? Please do tell.
This post is like selling the idea that most employees have the chance of 30 years service without getting laid off. Almost laughable, could be true for about 10% of the head count.
Glad to hear. Definite concerns with mine and others that I know who had 30+ before this happened.
Of course package was reviewed by Lawyer and financial advisor. It’s meets all statuatory and common law requiemenits in Canada. Including pension and benifit comp for the 2 years.
No concerns.
This is almost too good to be true considering there are a lot of people who put their hands up to retire but did not got laid off. Instead Enbridge will wait for them to retire on their own and not pay severance.
You should have a lawyer review your package. Don’t know if you’re US or Canada but either way should have it reviewed before you sign. Packages are ok but not what they should be.
