Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

Next week

Can we just confirm that layoffs are definitely done and we're safe from now on? Is there any chance there'll be more next week? I know what was said, but I have major trust issues when it comes to this leadership and it wouldn't surprise me if they blindsided us with something when we least expect it. Am I just being paranoid?

Massive layoffs coming in November for anyone who doesn’t know how to apply grease to a rod or can’t process liquids. I’m going to start practicing now.

If you are non unionized I say safe for now. The union cuts have not happened yet but they are coming (in Ontario at least). LUG union has wording for no layoff if contracting out work while LEG union does not. My suspicions are layoffs with recall rights in LEG and VWO-esque packages for LUG. Then you'll see movement within the unions to re-distribute staff according to needs.

Just so you know layoffs don’t stop. As the other reply says the BOEF went from 2015,2016 and 2017. The total of that is at least anywhere from 1,500-1,800 head count.

The merger of Enbridge and Spectra started in 2017 as announced with 1,000 layoffs but it went all the way to 2018 and 2019 in small pockets/batches. I know this because I know people who had been laid off late 2019 as a decision to choose between Enbridge or Spectra staff or which staff in certain geographical location to keep. This is probably around 1,200 total.

The VWO in 2020 announced at 800 head count for voluntary buyouts which was done sometime in June 2020 but I know of one team alone laid off 5 employees by October 2020.

Since these layoff announcements only includes employees, most often the contractors contract are not renewed so the total headcount is probably way more than what are on the press releases.

My suspicion, and only suspicion, I wouldn’t characterize it as “safe from now on”. It’s never the last layoff, just the last for now, and who knows how far off the next will be. I agree with the last comment, individual contributors are likely safe for now. I personally am expecting more to come with Next 75 restructuring, and maybe that hits all levels, who knows. Maybe it’s late this year, maybe it’s next, who knows. I think it’s absolutely necessary to get this Company on the right path. IMO, this company is too bloated in some places, and too siloed. Not enough people in many areas and too many in other area. Too many unnecessary tasks, requirements, and process. Workflow needs to be significantly streamlined with fewer people touching the workflow and greater accountability, but the right people and sufficient people in the right places so that they are able to actually live up to their accountabilities. Not sure if will ever get there, and I don’t disagree with the original post, I don’t really trust this leadership. But I do trust our CEO and I trust the one that is in charge of Next 75. I think they see many of the major issues pretty clearly, it’s whether they can fix them that’s the question. IMO it’s going to take some big restructuring to get us to where we need to be, and big restructuring comes with some layoffs, maybe even some new blood from the outside, at the leadership levels.
I struggle with the continual uncertainty of layoff and change, continual musical chairs of leadership and trying to understand new personalities and expectations constantly, and I’m guessing I’m not the only one that does. Always good to keep your personal finances in order, have the 6 months expenses in saving just in case, know your job and do it well and to the best of your ability, if you aren’t busy use the time wisely for increasing your skills or looking for other areas where you can contribute and seek out work to keep you busy.
Long comment, but just my opinions, that are worth nothing really.

Yeah nothing is going to happen next week this round is over.

I’ve heard some people speak about another round in the fall. I don’t know where that thought is coming from but I feel like it’s unfounded…but I’ve been wrong before.

BOEF had something like 3 rounds 2015, 2016, and finished in 2017. So who knows, there may be multiple waves of layoffs over the coming years associated with the next 75. Regardless, you aren’t ever safe until you’re retired or you’ve founded a high quality business and are working for yourself.

Learn, grow, and become more valuable. Then even if you do get let go you’ll be better suited for the next chapter of your life.

I’m thinking the individual contributors should be safe for several months now. No doubt we will continue to be blindsided by organizational restructuring and Next 75.
