Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Tom Stemberg Would be Ashamed

This guy started this once great company a while ago. Built on togetherness. Now. It’s all in fighting. Everyone protecting themselves. All individual goals vs group goal. All lead by horrific leadership. Dont get me wrong there are some really good leaders but most have been spread out to other divisions. I’ve never seen sooooo much in fighting within a company to win business. We ain’t working together anymore here. We are fighting eachother to win business when it’s comes in. No wonder Depot and Amazon are kicking our a-s. So much division. Until this leadership is fixed. It will never change.

They had a moment in time to turn this around. They had the#2 online presence behind only Amazon (yes really) and the retail stores were still kicking it.
They then made bunches of bad merchandise decisions that ended in their sale.
It was so bad (and still continues) out should be the basis of a HOW NOT TO book.

They had $1 Billion dollars cat on hand in 2008.
They were a 28 billion dollar a year company.
REALLY WORKS CLASS BAD DECISIONS THAT HAVE NOT GOTTEN BETTER AFTER ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE.

Incompetent leadership for sure! I left years ago and never saw a more siloed organization that operated based on a good old boy network. Guess what, it doesn’t work! The current leadership is just watching and wondering what happened!

Tom would be embarrassed! Sad!!!

The U.S.S. Staples hit the iceberg many years ago and and there is only one direction remaining.

If you call adapting the business model reworking the exact same model year over year and call it new because you have new leadership and no one knows better….than ok……keep paying your consultants to keep selling you the same strategy. It’s comical to watch. Results will be the same. Ship has long sailed.

Divide and conquer that’s the new strategy. Fire the Strategy team while you are at it, completely disrupted the business and kept or put terrible leaders in place of experienced great leaders and created roles with no process no comp plans no direction and moved all customers and teams around. It’s everyone for themselves. So right the founding father would be ashamed and every great leader no longer with the company is embarrassed with what this once great company has become.
