The long and short of it. UHG Leadership is to blame. They got what they wanted the data...and now the data is "out there" What a mess!
The DOJ permitted the inappropriate acquisition of CHC by UHG/Optum. CHC was a well oiled machine, a company of effective, knowledgeable, cutting edge individuals who knew what they were doing and actually took pride in their work. They truly wanted to build a better healthcare system. They did thing the right way every day. That had been the motto. Then UHG/Optum waltzes in and unravels the entire company and diminishes it reduction in force.
UHG/Optum, what are they? They are a rogue acquisition company that yields only to shareholder value as they continue to make money from sick people, by arbitrarily denying claims, and raising rates and internally by laying off knowledgeable, valuable employees, withholding raises and diminishing bonuses all to preserve shareholder value. For those of us who are gone, we are the lucky ones.
The DOJ lost its case, which is preposterous in and of itself. That judge should be dismissed. But then again, it's not nice to gloat over the current situation and misfortune being experienced here but it is definitely looking like PAY BACK which actually is more like PAYOUT - which will be in the form of security experts, data breach specialists, Government fines, penalties and monitoring, class action lawsuit payouts, loss of customers, etc. This is a massive disaster. They had it coming. Karma is brutal. To all of us who were victims of layoffs, we should be thankful we are no longer in this mess.
Offshoring is not effective; they are inept in security, the US healthcare system, and try to work like robots, however, the work requires thought and they don't think.
It is a very sad day for Change Healthcare because UHG/Optum has tarnished the Change Healthcare name and it's truly disgusting. Change Healthcare was a well-respected organization. UHG/OPTUM is pathetic, unethical, and toxic!
All they wanted was the data... oh well, now someone else has the data; it's payback time. Yeah, more layoffs, cuts, and other cost cutting activities will surely come out of this mess. This is not an organization that cares about their employees, members, customers, or patients. It is all about the money.
To further complicate matters, my internal contacts have said there has been no further communication, phone, website, or email internally or externally in the last few days. People that work there don't event know or realize that those with Change Healthcare equipment have no access and those who recently migrated also have no access. Emails have been cut off. That's not normal. On the websites, it looks like nothing has been updated on the public status page. What about the customers who pay good money for their products, services, and support?
Change Healthcare employees have been cut off from their laptops, their work, their files, and the systems etc. They are sending new equipment out to those employees but those will have limited access at best and no access to their work products, programs or other items necessary to perform.
Others inside say that there have been no talking points provided, etc. Such a messy situation. Not sure what type of disaster recovery plans they had but clearly insufficient for the size and nature of the sensitive data they hold which was even more complicated by the Change Healthcare acquisition. The Change Healthcare clearinghouse and other data that never should have been allowed to have been acquired by United Health Group. The judge from that DOJ trial should be investigated for losing that case.
United/Optum gutted Change Healthcare IT and IT security structure leaving those areas without the proper leadership. Individuals with experience and knowledge of the intricacies of the systems were victims of many layoffs. Employees were moved to report to others who had absolutely no knowledge and could not provide guidance. Each of these issues creates vulnerabilities. Mismanagement is catching up with them. Al about the mighty dollar. All the money in the world cannot undo reputational harm. (It happens with each company they acquire except in this one the stakes were much higher). In hindsight, was it really worth it to save a few bucks? Not likely with the amount this incident is going to cost in the end.
Hopefully Congress can demand answers. Hopefully the oversight agencies. DOJ, HHS, CMS, FBI, SEC, States Attorneys General, AHA and others can all ban together and get answers and rip them to shreds! We will be watching!

CHC a well-oiled machine? Funny stuff right there- cr-p products and platforms- and weak infrastructure. Massive technical debt that has now been exposed.
In response to "It took two to tango:"
The people who made the deal with UHG are long gone. Took their payouts and left. Neil has probably added a home or two to his portfolio of vacation getaways. Take a look at the Emdeon financials before the "merger" that became CHC. It was not a profitable venture. The MCK spinoff that created "Change HC" was USED to create wealth for a few people. Who benefited? Certainly not who has been left to see this mess occurring.
It took two to tango. If Change Healthcare was really passionate about changing healthcare then it wouldn’t have gone to bed with UHG.
Not sure about those who sold out but those who they riff'd should not have been as it left a gaping knowledge hole... UHG is to blame for this incident, not Change Healthcare. They don't understand the business nor the systems. That is the issue in a nutshell. UHG and Optum are horrific, toxic, incompetent money hungry organizations who do not care about anything but the might dollar. Shame on them!! They should get what they give tenfold!
Also need to look at the CHC leadership that sold out.
