Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

This whole thing could have been handled so much better

There isn't enough transparency. Employees have no idea what's going on and that affects our work. How hard is that to figure out? The more we stress over things and the more we wonder what's going to happen, the more morale will go down, and with it productivity. It doesn't take a genius to realize that.

Truth is, even if a store is closing, it is in the company's interest to keep staff in the dark so that they will continue to come to work and move the merchandise. If the store announced it was closing, wouldn't it make sense for workers to start looking for another job and leave- leaving even fewer people to move the merchandise and service customers.
Macys is a business. The company wants to maximize profits to stave off a hostile takeover attempt. The board of directors meeting is in May, which gives the new CEO about 2-months to turn the ship around. Closing under-performing stores, reducing inventory that doesn't move, adding new upscale merchandise to salvageable stores to draw in more shoppers is a last-gasp attempt to keep Macy's viable. The decisions are not easy ones- but, let's face it: This is the last hurrah. If this doesn't keep the stockholders hopeful that Macys can survive and even prosper- then that's the end for us all.
Obviously if you happen to work in a closing store, the above scenario is hard to swallow, but viewed objectively, it seems to be the only choice left because poor decisions have been made for too long. Even the best plan may be too little, too late.

Not enough transparency?
Have you been told the status of your store? How can that not be transparent?
We know our store is on the list to be closed and that closure will likely happen in 1-2 years.

Look at it this way. You certainly can not tell a store they would be closing in 1 year.
