Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

50s

If you’re in your 50s, do you expect more to get laid off than younger employees?

Age , length of service, and position are factors in connon law cases. Enb knows this and should pay accordingly.

If you mean severance dollar amounts, your age will have nothing to do with what you get offered. Length of service will.
So the fifty something employee who has worked there for 30 years will get offered more than the twenty something employee with 5 years worked.
Obviously you can't have a 25 year old with 30 years service and it's unlikely that you will find a 55 year old that was hired when they were 50.

Let’s get real people. Older white males are going to be fired at a far higher proportion than brown, yellow, black or aboriginal males or any females.
Enbridge lost its way 15 years ago. It’s on a slow deliberate path to death.

Ageism is often a cause for individual acts of age discrimination and also discrimination that is more systemic in nature, such as in the design and implementation of services, programs and facilities. Age discrimination involves treating persons in an unequal fashion due to age in a way that is contrary to human rights law. The Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits age discrimination in: employment, housing accommodation, goods, services and facilities, contracts and membership in trade and vocational associations.

Yes. Once you hit your 50s (as I have) you tend to feel like there's a target on your back. Even though you might have decades of industry experience, you're also most likely to be highly paid after all those years. All of that knowledge won't mean a thing when the companies are cutting costs.
