Job cuts and financial losses: Can John Lewis reverse its decline?

Long revered as one of Britain's most beloved department stores, John Lewis has been a staple on the high street for over 100 years. But against a landscape rife with economic uncertainty, the retailer has found itself grappling with fiscal challenges.

The recent appointment of Peter Ruis as managing director of retail, lauded as an "inspired hire" having already completed a successful stint as buying and brand director at the business in 2005-2013, suggests the business is taking note of the need to focus on its retail offer.

There's a long road ahead, however, with current turnaround efforts expected to take until 2027/28 to bear fruit. John Lewis's interim results, released on 14 September 2023, painted a bleak financial picture for the retailer as operating profit declined by 6% year on year to £277.1m for the 26 weeks ended 29 July. Its losses narrowed by 14% year on year to £57.3m in the period.
