Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Forced to Return to Office

Hello,

I recently started working at the big M this year. A friend of mine who referred me to the company also referred me to this website. Recently, My Sr. Manager required my group to return to office, Tuesday- Thursday. I first started working remotely near by HQ with no issues, after two weeks working on campus i was put on corrective action for not being a team player, i just want to do my work and go home. Also He might felt threaten by me asking why i was forced to return to office. Is anyone having this issue? My manager keeps bring up work your way only applies to individuals that meet the specific conditions/criteria. Anyone have some lead way on this?

At least you're able to work from home. The people that work from home act so entitled especially when they come to campus and complain they have to be in the office. It's about time for you WYW people to get their reality checks.

A role with responsibilities or direct reports in multiple countries outside of your own home country.

Purchase some Syrup of ipecac, drink it when you arrive on Tuesday, go to your managers office, and wait for projectile vomiting to begin. Then take the week off to find employment at an American company.

What exactly is a regional role?

Regional folks at JG15+? Wait til you see the new wave, being promoted to regional, but without a JG increase! There are some still at JG13 with regional roles. Better to underpay and allow them to WYW is what I think 3M would prefer instead of paying fair wages!

All I can say is wow at some of the comments. Yes, WYW is a privilege and a benefit for those who work in roles that can do it. If your role meets the requirements then you should reach out to HR unless your manager did it for a specific reason. For those who really think we who work remote take naps, watch TV, and goof off you have your facts wrong. I work remote and do none of those things. I will take my vacation time to enjoy life if needed. There might be a few slackers in the crowd but they were probably already like that in the office. I personally find no difference between working remote or going into the office except saving driving time and perhaps going to an occasional appointment. Again, I will make up that time or use sick/vac time. I work most times when sick unless symptoms are very severe so it's one drawback of working remote.

Those regional folks JG15+ are the ultimate winners for WYW. Get to enjoy high salary working at comfort of their home. Can take naps, walk the dogs, do household chores. Really great job while earning $250,000 pay package

WYW should have never been an option, now here we are. The entitlement mentality blows me away. Work/life balance is up to the individual to make it work for them. Everyone's situation is unique -manage your life and move on.

Seems like OP is not telling the whole story.

If it’s true, they should contact HR.

If the truth is that they’re a bad employee, and on CA for behavior and/or performance, then they should look in the mirror.

And learn how to formulate a sentence

Why is it that 50% of the people on this site can’t form a grammatically correct sentence, given tools like spellcheck, google, and chatgpt? Perhaps a big reason for the decline of 3m is that they hired a bunch of ret@rds.

3M just needs to pick a lane. Either everyone returns to office or people can continue to work their way. Remember they are super proud of this and just paid to have an article published about how forward thinking the company is. Leaving it to the managers is not the best decision, in my opinion. Why should you be forced to go into the office if no one is there? I understand if your role requires you to be in the office, but I’m pretty sure 90% of the campus is empty.

Depends what and where your role is.
If you work on a site, you MUST be onsite to be an effective team player.
If you are a customer service, sales, marketing for the site then few days onsite is ok per site requirement.
If you are in legal, reg etc in main campus then could be different again.

I think this is issue with most managers. They witnessed lot of the managers laid off in last round. Now they want to show they are doing something. With their age and salary expectations, most of them can't find a job elsewhere.

Could be worse, you could be like the 6 year employee in the post above that lost their job.

Entitlement is a word that comes to mind.

Peter Gibbons made it clear that for 3M to succeed, it needed butts in the seats and in the office. Teamwork doesn't work on-line. You've had enough time to goof off at home, watching The Price Is Right, taking afternoon naps, walking the dog on conference calls.

Bill Brown would be wise to pull the plug on this WYW bs.

Go Pete Go!

The nerve! How dare they ask you to come into work.

Wow! I would speak to HR immediately! He can’t force you to work onsite. But hey, they protect the company
