Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why KLTC?

I hear about BTC, and I can understand that, many companies send their work to India. Heck, all my taxes are now being done in India back office.
What I can’t wrap my head around is why we have KLTC? They don’t even work my hours like BTC does.

KLTC started before BTC or any India foot print 13 years ago. The office started with 20-30 people in the existing upstream building. Startup costs were minimal for EMTEC. The office supported downstream and EMRE. The office blew up in size and now is hard to ki-l. If we had an Indian office at the time KL would never have happened.

KL simply has a small talent pool, too many holidays and a low work ethic

Pr---------n in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is technically illegal. However, the city has a thriving underground s-x industry, and it is known to be a destination for s-x tourism. The government and local law enforcement have struggled to control the spread of pr---------n in the city, and it remains a complex and controversial issue.

I have worked with both, and both have great talent. Both are better than Houston. Both are worse than home grown talent. But homegrown talent is costly, because they are in better economic countries. At the end of it, we are trading quality for cost. The impact won’t be known today, but would be in two decades. Look at any other company that went outsourcing, no good stories anywhere.

Easy answer. The cost of a Kuala Lumpur engineer is 1/5th to 1/7th the cost of the same engineer in Houston or Belgium or Fawley.

EM used to hire the best engineers and scientists around the globe. Always the top.
"Used to".
It's not just KL we are tawking about.
A commodity/subsidy company does not really need the best of anything. Except profit, of course.

KLTC used to only hire Top Malaysian graduate from UK, US and Australia. Then they start with the top engineering college in Malaysia. Now they start to hire any one that have a degree in chemical engineering or sound like chemical engineering. It’s so diluted now and chances to work with a good one is getting slimmer and slimmer.

The graduates that remain in Malaysia are the substandard ones. Most find jobs and opportunities outside of the country such as singapore.

Because India is more corrupt than Malaysia, with potential chance of theft of intellectual property. We pride our data and catalyst technology, so chose KLTC for downstream process

Because it was supposed to be business support center with 200-300 engineers. Malaysia speaks English and they have great ChemE schools. It was a good idea until they decided to move everything there and hiring average students. Malaysia does not have enough graduating students to support growing TC. Also when they picked KL as location we owned refineries in Japan, Australia and Thailand.

Because we, US-based, want to travel to Asia and enjoy the tropics and beaches there. And that's business-class flights and five-star accommodation while there. Enjoying it while it lasts for I know that when KLTC takes over in the future, most of them will be coming over and none of us US-based would be here anymore.

Just follow our upstream oil & gas money train.

When you are partnered with Petronas and considered a "major" oil and gas producer in the region, you create a technology center when your partner Petronas insists on employing engineers in Malaysia. Additionally, the cost of a Kuala Lumpur engineer is one-fifth the cost of a Houston or Brussels engineer.

Overview

ExxonMobil is one of the major crude oil producers and suppliers of natural gas in Malaysia.

It operates under four production sharing contracts (PSCs) with the Malaysian national oil company, PETRONAS, producing about one-fifth of the nation’s oil production and about one-half of natural gas supplies to Peninsular Malaysia. In chemicals, ExxonMobil has a strong market position, supplying a portfolio of specialty products to the growing marketplace. The ExxonMobil Business Support Center in Malaysia hosts the company’s IT organization and provides support across the globe. Additionally, the ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Global Support Office provides technical, engineering and application support for ExxonMobil’s refineries around the world.

ExxonMobil is committed to investing in the countries in which we operate, and in Malaysia, our contributions and employee volunteerism projects focus on math, science and English education, energy literacy, safety and health and corporate governance. These activities are focused around our key operating sites in Kuala Lumpur and Terengganu.
