Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Increase from GL 29 to 30

Hello

I anticipate an offer shortly for a GL 30 role in a completely new area. Currently a GL 29. What type of increase has everyone received in the past at this grade level? Is it more based upon a % increase from currently salary, or the target pay of the new role? I know ranges are posted, but at a GL 30, even the mid market range is very large. Would targeting the midpoint be reasonable? Or more like 90-95% of midpoint? Do most teams budget the midpoint?

There’s no rule of thumb. It totally depends on the job code within the grade level. If you are a 29 going to 30 then you’ll likely be at the 25th percentile of the 30.

Is this a new position during a hiring freeze, Or is this a backfill? Beware Optum culture; someone in leadership gets a whim, creates a plan, throws it against the wall, and sees if it will stick. My friend was promoted to a 29 associate director role and 3 months later they determined expanding that department was a bad idea and booted her on out the door. Optum enjoys doing that.

Love to hear that you have some internal mobility - love the positive stories - general rule of thumb is a 10% increase to you current salary if you're moving up GL. It could certainly be less or more depending on if you're transitioning to another division.

Just as if you were applying outside the company, a promotion should be for ~10% over your current salary; more is great, but don't settle for less. The pay ranges are published and the recruiter will try to keep you around the 25th percentile of the range for the market.

Depending on where you are currently at, you can expect about a 10% to 13% raise for a grade level jump. I don't know any GL30s making more than mid $150s. I know folks that are between $145K and $155K, roughly.

Who knows but it was clear from previous posts that GL 30 got no raises this year at all and barely received bonuses either. Be very careful what you wish for. Make sure whatever salary you agree to is enough with out a raise or bonus. Good luck.
