Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Can I job hunt externally?

Recently given notice of layoff at the beginning of the week, and so far I have received no communication at all from HR. A part of me feels like applying internally is just a waste, but I have been applying externally, as I'm sure that would be the usual gut reaction to those who have been let go, to keep hustling.

Would severance prevent me from job-hunting? Or are there any restrictions? I'm just looking to keep things afloat with family and expenses by looking for opportunities.

No, you're not allowed to look for jobs outside of Citi, that would be cheating.

Email from HR stated your external email will be shut down as of 4/1, along with internet, unless a CMP was done and approved. You will be a lame duck till gone.
Health insurance should go till 5/31. Good hunting to all those looking for a job!

I have asked this with the HR rep, who despite the sc-mmy situation, has been open and honest with me
To answer the question - Yes you can external job hunt (i have been told citi will accommodate time off for interviews if needed)
R.E severence, there will be a date in the near future (for me its a little over a month away) where your redundancy "may be confirmed" (HR's words not mine) . If confirmed, that is the beginning of your notice period. (The use of the words if and may I wouldn't pin any hope on, the conversations dont give that tone of we are thinking it over, but more so, we are waiting on legal obligations to be carried out)

If you get employment BEFORE being given notice - No severance as you technically left the job before being let go

If you get employment DURING or AFTER the notice period, your entitled to severance.

All the above is straight from the conversation with my HR rep (and yes its in writing)

If I find a job externally during the warn notice, does it have an effect on anything? Or my severance?

You’re in the office until whatever your last day is, then there’s the WARN notice period of 60 or 90 days, you get your normal paycheck and benefits just no access/non working. After that period then you get severence, can get cobra, apply for unemployment, etc

To answer previous queries:

  1. I got the layoff notice on Monday, however, still nothing from HR. I am concerned about the ending of my health insurance, but I'll have to see what happens whenever they reach out to me. I have to work until 4/15… My recommendation, do the minimum and spend that remaining time networking with as many people as you can because you never know when they could be able to help you in some capacity.
  1. thanks for the replies, I intend to continue with the external job hunt. I realize that internal searches are not only difficult, but I almost feel like even if I happen to land something internally… It'll be like I'm putting myself back into a job full of uncertainty and stress until 2026… Is it worth it? Probably not, unless something internal is meant to be used as a steppingstone, or a gap filler towards something better.

But you are right… External may be the better way.

Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate it, and know that you are all not alone in this.

I got laid off Monday. Finally got some lame email from HR. Said nothing. Very vague. Mentioned the "notice period" and that health insurance would cease after the "notice period" but never actually said what/how long the notice period is. Nice, eh???

I'm having to work until 4/15. Are you?

There are no restrictions. Using game theory and the number of folks released vs the number of known open roles, your most wins and ROI will be derived from external searches. Internal searches are incredibly difficult right now without someone personally advocating for you.
