Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Remote vs Hybrid

This whole exercise looks like its penalizing the hybrid workers.

The disadvantages for remote workers - no promotions, no salary hikes would be real disadvantages if those advantages existed. Promotions across the orgs are few and far, whereas metric increase is a measely 3% which I am willing to give up to be remote. And even then a remote worker can reclassify as hybrid at any given time, if there is a promotion in line of sight for that individual.

Anyone else feel the same way?

The only way my dept. got such talented people (who are burning up the runway, BTW) is through recruiting remote. These people aren't even located within hours of an office; 6 of them were hired before COVID and now they're being told they can't be promoted. I do know for a fact that in my area, that the city is putting the sc--ws to Dell to bring back office workers due to the foot traffic for the local businesses; the consequence for not doing that is revocation of tax breaks for the offices..... I have NOT heard that raises will be nixed for remote workers, just promotions.

With the two week opt-in period complete, I’d love to hear what % chose remote.

MD wants to ride into the sunset. This whole RTO thing the last couple years is because MD is allowing JC to make more of these type of company wide decisions. JC is a control freak and theres something about him where i dont trust one word he says.

Im hoping most of the company stands up to this nonsense and chooses remote so theyre forced to backpeddle

remote or hybrid will not matter when it's time to cut it will happen; don't think this place wouldn't copy Stellantis and call for work from home day to pull off a mass layoff

Dell thrives on its contradictions, as in no difference with remote work says the CEO
while their own executives interrupt and act as they believe

"Remotes will be gone long before hybrid"

Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.

Remotes will be gone long before hybrid unless a hybrid is a very poor performer

"Dell is becoming an office based company"

No they are not. They basically sold and closed out buildings to over 50% in some places. This is more monkey see monkey do management with rto. Dell execs are not visionaries they are just parroting the newest trend at the moment.

In 2022 Michael Dell said:

‘If you are counting on forced hours spent in a traditional office to create collaboration and provide a feeling of belonging within your organization, you’re doing it wrong.

At Dell, we found no meaningful differences for team members working remotely or office-based even before the pandemic forced everyone home.

Inconsistency seems the only consistency at Dell

Remote people will be leaving the company over the next few years. They will start soon with getting rid of remote execs and then it will filter down to everyone else. Dell is becoming an office based company and they don't want remote staff

Really no upside to hybrid. You can always convert to it from remote. Remote is a one-time window however.

You would be foolish to think hybrid would protect you from WFRs. Remote or hybrid you will always be looking over your shoulders.

Former dell/EMC employee here, I had a great laugh over the threat of no promotions. Worked there for 12 years and the only promotions EVER to happen were if you switched jobs. No dept ever once had the budget to promote anybody. But there's other things, like the remote folks being the first names on the cutting board when layoffs come around.
