Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Life after layoff

Our team may be on the chopping block. For those of you who found a job after leaving Dell, how long did it take and were you able to find comparable or higher comp?

It took me about 3 months, but I picked and chooses. Went from a hardware based role with the Boeing contract to a cushy cloud admin role at a local travel company. Upped salary by 10k a year and get to travel a lot as part of work.

DELL is very desirable on resumes in tech. Leverage everything. Invest in skills and set aside money to go with the severance. Don't rush into the next role. You are more valuable than you may think.

TLDR about 3 months for the job I picked, 10k more a year, same or better benefits stayed in tech role but left tech industry. You will come out better, u promise

Announced "open to work" on LinkedIN and had a ton of immediate offers.

Started a new job 2 months later making 30k less a year (i was on a higher TTC with 70/30 grandfathered in so didnt have to move to 60/40 and new Job is 50/50)

Overall making slightly less of a guarantee but still good money.

All in all market is comparable but it's flooded with talent right now due to layoffs at numerous companies so it may come down to who you know and not what you know

It took me about 18 months, my new role paid about 30% more, it's a much nicer place to work, having said that my team colleagues were fantastic, even giving my old manager a good kicking in Tell Dell, such a good kicking he was demoted 3 days later, he was subject to WFR later.

Around 6 months for every $100k in compensation is a good rule of thumb. Depending on how well your interview and how big your network is, the time could be less. Network, network, network!

Went through Sales Academy in 2022 and was at Dell 1.5 years before WFR in Aug 2023. Found a position paying 30% higher base and double OTE in completely different field 7 months later. According to several recruiters, so many local hiring managers around Austin area saw Dell on my resume and passed immediately. Having Dell on my resume was the worst career move ever, especially around Austin area. Reputation may get better the further away from Round Rockn you get. Now in a different field and things are much better

market has brutal competition.
These comments trying to humiliate those who are still seeking, are not helping.
Just coz we got lucky in getting hired, doesnt mean we are gods.
It will only take one day for everything to change.
Nothing is permanent.
So treat everyone the way you want to be treated if you were in their place.

Took me one month for total compensation about 30% higher. I wish I’d left sooner.

16 years at Dell, left October last year. Landed role in 4 months, 40% higher salary. Know of others who also left and it took them a bit longer but landed better roles. There is opportunity out there and it may take a while but if you have good experience and leverage your network for referrals you should be ok.

Bloomberg mentions 13K reduction in Dell in last year. Behind paywall but title is enough ..https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-26/dell-layoffs-hit-13-000-employees-over-the-past-year?embedded-checkout=true

Unfortunately the job market in companies that are anyway associated with technology are not hiring and in a contraction mode of lowering cost and employee count. Especially if you are an older aged employee with experience you are making higher wages than the young recent hires that are not being released by these companies as they continue to let employees go. Sad sad state that Dell is in and don’t see how they change this business model especially with the consultants that they are using.

20+ years at Dell. Took about 3 months to get an offer and another to get seated. About 30% lower comp (govt), but OK with it because I'm late career.

I would point out you actually did quite well. Last year was much worse in terms of job market and you landed squarely on your feet with limited experience.

undoubtedly things will only get better for you looking forward.

I was part of the WFR in August last year. Was with Dell for about 2 years. It was my second 'real job' out of college. Started a new job at a software company in December, so about 4 months off.
Base salary is like 33% higher, but I don't receive commission in my new role, so total comp is about even. Benefits aren't as good, although I do get double the amount of vacation time than at Dell and the entire workforce is completely remote.
It's a brutal job market right now. You may just have to settle for something in the meantime to pay the bills. Would recommend looking at smaller companies instead of the global giants as well - much more room for growth and opportunity to upskill.

Hmm.. I am over 10 years and less than 20. Don't think Dell would start to hire externally for another 2 years or so. Wish I had left Dell earlier

I think it's a function how long you've been at dell.

Under 4 years you will be fine and high probability of actually making more money.
Over 5 years and your chances post dell start to look less promising.
Over 10 years and you pretty much should try to claw your way back to dell post layoff.
Over 20 and you might as well buy a plot behind the building.
