Those who make it through layoffs are the ones who drew the short straw. They're the ones who get stuck grinding away at this sinking ship of a company, doing more work than ever and knowing full well they'll likely be laid off eventually too, and probably with a much lower severance. How is that not depressing?

I was in the RIF last May, they called me on my day off, which happened to be my n birthday. It was so heartless and cruel.
After the initial shock and anger wore off I realized I was actually one of the lucky ones!
They had so much talk of helping find other jobs in the company or out side, but that was a total joke. No one in management at this company cared anything except padding their own bank accounts .
If you currently work there and are worried about getting let go, do yourself a favor and just go!!
I had the same experience as you, Anonymous. I was so scared and upset to be laid off but once it happened, I couldn’t believe how relieved I was. I got a great severance because I was in the first round of RIFs. I had the whole summer last summer to do what I wanted. Then right after the three months I got severance for, I found a job at an ethical company where I have never felt so appreciated.
The only ironic thing is that the health insurance at my current company is… UHC. Womp womp.
Having been laid off after two decades with most of my team, I can say that my mental health and sense of well being - both mentally and physically- have been exceptionally improved since being RIFed.
The RIF hurt financially at first but I feel like I was released from the penitentiary! I do feel badly for some team members who were not RIFed as they are miserable especially since the team has been stripped.
I wish you could leave emoji responses on these bc the comments always slay. But seriously how depressing is it getting told the reason you didn’t get a raise is bc the profit centers were elsewhere but like can someone actually explain where the profit centers product wise is now? It’s laughable and sui-idal that they’re still rebranding products and pursuing new business while others leave in troves and the whole healthcare industry is at a standstill.
Former colleague (who was laid off in 2019) reached out to me when she was unable to submit claims due to the Change hack, she stated she'd be an alcoholic by now if she still worked at United. That says a lot!
