Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Fear, mongering or what?

I read almost every month that mass layoffs are expected, but each month passes and there are only minor cuts here and there, mostly in acquired companies. I'm not saying layoffs aren't happening, but they're not as severe as many are making them out to be.

There were posts predicting mass layoffs before bonuses, but now that everyone is about to receive their bonuses, the layoffs are supposedly going to happen in April instead. Are people trolling? Do they enjoy seeing others worry on a daily basis? I just don't understand...

It’s optums norm to do smaller layoffs every quarter to avoid the Feds oversight.

To those who don't seem to understand magnitude... because UHG is purposefully avoiding WARN act notifications, you're not seeing media coverage.

If Walmart or FedEx or Amazon or other companies in the Fortune 20 were laying off the number of people UHG is that would be a news story..

Those who are trying to minimize know nothing.

  • 002% vs the actual correct 2%. That's off by a factor of 1000. That's 3 zeros technically!

Along with layoffs and this site being right most of the time there’s serious age discrimination by management at this company. Without warning your manager rates you a 2 all of the sudden and never mentioned anything about it prior. Then when you say you are surprised, they act like they told you. I hope for a layoff to get unemployment vs them trying to fire and torture you to quit. Let me give you some excellent advice don’t quit! Stay for unemployment! I’m not sure how they can live with themselves. There’s very poor leadership here, they lie about you, the your management steals all your ideas. Take credit for them, say your ideas are great and then rate you a 2 saying they can’t pinpoint why they rated you a 2. Seriously! I hope I summarized it well for you all!

That’s my point. Why paint a picture that there’s MASS layoffs when .002% of the company has been cut?

You have to also be sympathetic and empathetic, for the people were still working. Pushing such narratives is stressing people out on the daily basis and that’s just as bad.

I feel very bad for people who have been cut, but I am also not naïve to the fact that there are certain people on these posts that are just simply lying cause fear.

There was a post may be a few weeks ago that specifically called out a department and said 10% of that department was being cut, and this person continuously said every Thursday that this department will be cut, and guess what?? I was in that department and zero people were cut

For the people that have been laid off it is severe.

So .002% is considered mass layoffs now?

Let's talk some facts - your little area in a company of 400,000 is a tiny slice of pie. You are not seeing the macro view. There were well over 8,000+ layoffs last year. Each of those a person who was working hard - many for a long, long time. And that's the thanks they got.

2024? Even more will be laid off.

And they're counting on the zero merit for the big roles and low RRP for all to do its job. Driving people out so they don't have to take the millions in severance hit. Like the top leaders said, they know their comp strategy will cause people to quit and that's why they did it.

Getting hysterical about layoffs helps no one but people with tiny views should stop their minimizing because you don't know a thing.

In my opinion, a little bit over everything. There are definitely those here who have a axe to grind and want to see it all burn. I am not sure why they spend so much energy trying to take down the company? Maybe they have too much free time?

There have not been mass layoffs. Yes some people got RIFed and yes it does su-k. If you are the one affected it doesn't matter what size. However for a company of this size doing this many acquisitions there are going to be constant separation and RIFs. This is the nature of the beast. If you want job security get a gov job.

It's by design. Optum wants to to afraid for your job so you accept things you wouldn't normally accept.

I have lots of insight and I’ve been told literal dates of when our department would be cut and there was lots of noise for 1 person out of 200+ to be let go.

I know many people in the company and the same applies. After the CHC acquisition, there has been lots of cuts.

Not saying there’s not cuts, but people on here have been “predicting” mass layoffs in specific departments and they have simply not happened.

There needs to be a balance between pushing BS and making people panic on the daily and providing actually insight. When 3 nurses get cut that isn’t a mass layoff, sorry…

I am one of the casualties of a “minor cut” as you so elequently call it from last week. Must be nice to be in such a cushy spot that you don’t seem to have any worry and actually perpetuate the absurd notion of “fear mongering.”

GTFOH.

How do are you determining what's a small layoff? This site has been on point 9/10x maybe because I know people, and they know people. The amounts have been large. If you were a people leader, and you have openings you would have heard and/or received an email list of people who were termed thats looking for a job. There have been many times that I've been reached out by recruiters, who are helping others get redeployed. Many of those times, I didn't even hear about a layoff. There would be hundreds of people on that list. Despite what you may think, not everyone knows about this site. I only knew because I typed in Optum layoffs one year and found it. No one told me about it.

Hundreds of people are being laid off every other week. What do you consider "minor"?

‘Small layoff’ is relative. If it happens to you it’s not a small thing.

I agree with the above statement. There are layoffs all the time some big but most are smaller but frequent it’s part of the game because of warning acts or individualized state legal mandates. Not everybody got a bonus nor is it fear mongering as most on here I believe want to genuinely worn others and provide information that this company tries to hide.

There are MASS layoffs and about every other week there smaller groups played off but this is a company with over 400,000 employees with hundreds of divisions and product lines. You may be fortunate to be in a division that’s not seeing this trend and leadership throughout the company has been well warned not to discuss these matters or respond to questions regarding layoffs.
