Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Never let go of so many people in my career

In my overall career I’ve never had to let go of so many people in my organization over the past 3 years as I have with Dell. Yet, they keep the SVP’s and VP’s in place. You’ve got SVP’s report to SVP’s! You’ve got VP’s with 2 reports! But you’re going to get rid of your good workers now.

You know why you can’t get better? Because you’re too fat at the top! Are you dense Jeff and Mike?!

It shows that you really don’t know who to run a business. You are good at playing financial and putting on strategic cons but actually having to lead and manage? No. You listen to 3rd party consulting companies to do that who have zero skin in the game.

Shareholders - this is who is leading the company. 5 years Dell will be gone. Split apart and sold off.

In 2023, I experienced a layoff despite my significant contributions to my team, including extensive code development and recognition from customers. Additionally, I have obtained numerous technical certifications, particularly in AI. It's disheartening to witness the apparent inefficiencies within Dell's IT department, where senior directors and their teams seem underutilized. Some teams take an excessive amount of time to implement minor configuration changes, and resources are often mis-allocated, with multiple individuals assigned to tasks that could be handled by far fewer people. Furthermore, there appears to be a surplus of senior directors and I-10 executives, many of whom seem to be primarily involved in scheduling rather than driving meaningful progress. Additionally, certain QA groups have struggled to complete test bed environments over the past two years despite efforts to automate testing processes. Some product groups seem more focused on generating hype rather than delivering tangible results, with new buzzwords introduced every couple of years without significantly impacting Dell's product offerings. Initiatives such as "Dell Print," "Dell APEX," "Dell Cloud," and "Gen AI" have failed to translate into meaningful changes or profits. Many patents filed by Dell lack practical value, with a significant portion remaining unused for revenue generation. Unfortunately, it appears that Dell's executives prioritize layoffs of lower-level employees, including technical staff, while protecting and promoting their favored individuals.

Sorry to hear that. I was a victim of a recent 23 round. Life has gotten hard for us as the world spins out of control. I started earning and paying W2 taxed wages at 15 and now 45 years of steady employment at my layoff. Not old enough to get Medicare and not a popular age to get hired. These layoffs are life ending events for some. Dark days ahead for some and opportunities for others. I don’t envy you having to be that person doing the dirt deed.

To all the people claiming they have run a company - then you will know that the business metrics that are used to cull the employees at lower level is now raised one level up.
Cutting lower level does not exonerate the mistakes or business loss. It only postpones accountability for the top layer.
The business loss WILL be compensated eventually.
Business metrics do not favor anyone except mathematics.
It will devour everyone ( c- level, grunt level) in its path until the mathematical equation is balanced for profit/loss . It is a matter of time.
Seen it happen many times .

“start your own company , be successful and lead differently if you know how to do it better. I be signing up for it.”

I’m glad to hear it. I did and sold it off. Been through a lot. Which is why I think what’s happening is horrible.

"share-holders your only duty is return profits to them , there is no magic"

True but the posters point is you can do good to shareholders and employees. Take apple, google, microsoft, etc.

Plenty of company are succeeding on both ends. Dell is not one. And it's their prerogative. true. but it's still a discount company and heading to irrelevancy.

Also is dell really succeeding on the shareholder return side??
MS and Dell used to be hand in hand. Look at where one is now compared to the other.

it sounds like crying

it's commercial company that MD started and runs the way he wantes - having money from share-holders your only duty is return profits to them , there is no magic

and there is people that work , their life depends on income for their families , for kids to grow up have food and education , for their elderly partners , for their partners and their own old age

but that is nowhere written in the social contract of what we subscribe working for Corporate American

letting go good people may help them to shine in new environment

it's sad truth that what once was bright and shining company taking market by storm today is shell of large corporate machinery operating on margins for profits

only way to change that is ...start your own company , be successful and lead differently if you know how to do it better. I be signing up for it.
