Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

Past Severance

Would anyone happen to know the severance calculations for past layoffs (2015, 2016, 2017 or 2020)? I am a fairly new employee of Enbridge and interested to see if there’s a trend with what’s offered.

They only include time spent as an employee unfortunately.

If you mean years being a contractor, it's almost certain they will NOT include that time.

Anyone know if they only include service as an employee or do they take your service working in the same role as a contingent worker before becoming an employee?

Of course you are getting your STIP, it is based on last year’s performance and released every end of February next year. And you’re also getting the commuted value of your pension because that’s already yours, you’re just going to either move it to your personal account or leave it as monthly pension depending on your age and years of service and pension legislation on your province.

But hey to expect to get 4 weeks per year of service is a laughable entitlement especially if you have not been with company for a long time. Besides if you had worked at Enbridge for a long time, you had already made money more than the average in the industry and you should have better finances by now that even if you get laid off you’re not going to be destitute after even with “not 4 wks per year severance”.

I would be surprised if you had worked at Enbridge for at least a decade and you’re still swimming in debt that even if you get 4wks severance it’s not enough to pay off everything (except mortgage if course).

Some long term employees in Ontario in past got beyond 2 years.
If get 2 years should get the value of pension and benefits as well baseline STIP included in offer.
Legal advice is worth it. But they do not want 650 battles so expect all of the above offer.

I can't speak for US employees but anyone I know who has been laid off in Ontario over the last 10 years or so in one of the big purges has received fair and and more than adequate compensation. Anyone posting doom and gloom as it relates to severance is either misinformed or trolling. Say what you want but they do not want to fight legal battles. If you're let go, the package will be more than adequate.

People are so entitled to expect at least 4wks per year of service. It’s actually laughable the level of entitlement of a lot of people working at Enbridge.

Severance is based on your years of service, your age and your position. If you are over 50 have 9 years and at a manager level, you are entitled to way more than someone that is the same situation that say 35. always have a lawyer look it over but if it is around 4 weeks per year of service you are likely ok to take it depending on the situation. people are right ENB is risk adverse and they know these rules so SHOULD offer accordingly

VWO was an “extraordinary” offer and might not happen again.

2yrs pay max is only for those who had been with the company for at least 20+ yrs.

Layoff back in 2015, someone with the company for 2yrs got 3mos pay severance. Even that is generous.

Someone I know got laid off in 2019, 15yrs service and got 1yr pay as severance.

If you’re in US, there are states that you are “at will” employment and legally no severance.

In Canada, each province labor legislation has some number of weeks equivalent as severance. There is also what you call a “common law” and this is where some people say get a lawyer but Enbridge lawyers probably know how to address this anyway.

Keep your own house in order, you’re working for a for profit company. You’re a number, not a family.

VWO varied. Mine was 5.3 / year.

As far as "see a lawyer if it's under 4 weeks per year", to make that worthwhile it would have to be a lot under 4. But hey... can't hurt to ask.

"Max 24 was clear even in the news"

No, it wasn't. Although it is true, Enbridge did not disclose ANY terms, as they vary substantially by individual.

2 years salary max is generally where the cap ends, and that's the number you'll see referred to as "up to" by the labour lawyers waiting to pounce. But the only people hitting that cap have been with the company a long time.

VWO paperwork was 4.8 weeks per yr but asked a peer for something more recent and roughed it out to about 3.5

How new? Most of the calculations are based on a "weeks per year of service" to a maximum. If you've only been around a short while, don't expect a windfall.
