Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Rehire after layoff & severance?

If I take the severance, can I ever be re-hired by Shell?

Seeing some alarming reddit posts that say I cannot.

Yes, I know of this happening to at least one person. If someone at the EVP level approves, they will allow you to be hired back.

Are you familiar with Dilbert? Where the head of HR is Ratbert? Just saying…

OP here. I asked HR for clarification and the policies they sent me on rehire say, in a nutshell, that if you haven’t been terminated for cause, there’s a 6-month waiting period before you’re eligible for rehire. This is regardless of whether you take the severance or not.

So! Some possible good news there.

If you've been offered severance, but do not take it, Shell takes it as you quitting and you get nothing. You've already been targeted for layoff, refusal to take the severance won't save your job. Take the money and run.

Are you serious? Rehire after severance? Maybe they’ll double your salary too. Give me a break and get real.

As I understand it the general answer is not, or it takes VP sign off.

Take the severance and work for another major.

It would take VP approval of the BU you are trying to join. I wouldn’t count on it.

The prohibition does not apply if you do not take severance, though you can still be flagged as do not rehire depending on your circumstances at exit.

Agree. Have seen it a couple of times but HR generally blocks it.

I guess what I’m curious about is if I do not take the severance, does that prohibition still apply?

In most cases it's not possible, but if you have a very senior leader willing to support it it can be. Same with coming back as a contractor. I have seen some such cases. I don't know whether it matters if you chose to leave voluntarily or not.
