Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

Number of VPs

Does any know how many VPs Enbridge actually has? I've heard some numbers thrown out but want to confirm.

The high number of vps is due to the Command and Control management system in place at Enbridge. The executive team makes all decisions of consequence and the responsibility for executing the strategy falls to the vps. The front-line vps and all below are just viewed as peons. Enbridge has adopted this style over the last 20 years. Years ago in the IPL days, it was a much more collaborative company. One of the downsides of this management style is low employee engagement. The bet is that the 20 people making the decisions know more than the thousands executing the decisions. You need extremely knowledgeable and competent people at the top to pull this off. I'm not sure we have them. That said, even in the Command and Control system this many vps are excessive. I know of a US company with 34,000 employees that has 17 vps

one of the key signs of a failing organization, just like a failing country, is a bloat like this size at the top of the ladder.

You need one president and CEO

An EVP for each business unit. (5)

A SVP for each function of each business unit (5 for LP, 7-8 for GTM, 3 for GDS, 2 for Power, 4-5 for corporate affairs)

that gives us at best below 30 people to run our base business units.

any way you cut it, more hands in the pot (at least from their thought process) means less blame you can pin on any one person in the top echelons. If you're gonna pay me to the tune of millions or tens of millions of dollars per year, I better be in a position where the business significance of those decisions I'm making justify my paycheck. With VP numbers in the 80s, there is no way in he-l the paychecks they are making are justified by the impact of their diluted decision making responsibility.

What are the VPs actually doing? They are making decisions who's impacts are denominated in millions. Sure, they aren't turning wrenches or digging ditches. That's not what they have to offer. Like it or not, they are paid to think, decide, and direct. From the outside looking in, that looks like they don't do anything. But VP is the first line of leadership that can move the needle enough that the company can flourish or die.

I don't know if 86 is too many. There are too many variables I'm unwilling to examine. But every level of leadership above you looks increasingly unnecessary... except they aren't. You not understanding a role does not imply that the role is unnecessary.

Just did some looking and came across this. 6 Executive VP's, 17 Senior VP's, and 63 VP's. 86 total VP's. 86.

1 EVP has 3 SVP's and 15 VP's reporting to him. Another EVP has 4 SVP's and 10 VP's reporting to him. Another EVP has 2 SVP's and 11 VP's reporting to her.

Absolutely incredible. How much are they costing the company? What do their bonuses look like? If the company got rid of 2/3 VP's, would they need to fire anymore employees?

VPs are the most useless group of people in an organization. Other than attend meetings and have discussions with their underlings, are they really producing anything? When they say they're working, what exactly are they doing?

You will have the same or possibly more. No reductions above the manager level.

88 the last time I counted (about one year ago). Complete insanity. It's a top-down dictatorship but still, 88? I believe some had no reports either. I know of bigger companies that run with less than 20.
