Early Retirement vs Lay Off

Has United/Optum ever offered early retirement options for employees rather than random lay-offs?

Back in 2017, if you met the criteria... You would get a 12 month severance + insurance.

I am curious what the difference is since there is no company pension for retirement as far as I know. Are there benefits for retiring from the company? Do you still get severance (or
More than severance)?

Yes, in 2017 there was a major early retirement initiative that folks over a certain age and years of service benefitted from. I had 5 directs take advantage of the offer.
