Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Have we all forgotten?

Although we're going through a major upheaval by a company that has zero respect for its employees (new or old), let's not forget how bad vmware's management was.

In particular, the man-in-charge, who got us into this situation, and got a $50,000,000 payout, plus consulting fees. I imagine the only value the consultation would be is to ask, "Hey Raggy, what would you do in this situation?", and then do the exact opposite.

Hahahaha no doubt you were the smartest and most intelligent person in the room,

The room consisted on an unskilled product manager making technical decisions with no input from the team.

That is dysfunctional as it gets.

Might as well have marketing work on the linux kernel while we are at it.

If you think Raghu is to blame then you have already forgotten who made this happen.

No? Didn’t think so

Oops wrong. Yea, I’ll “give it back”, whatever that means.

Horrible managment led to us being acquired by Gordon Gekko. That is our reality.

VMware was a deeply fraudulent company hiding behind fake policies like EPIC2. What has happened to it is karma.

“I can easily do without that list of so called benefits if proper product decisions were being made by intelligent people. Many of the items on the list are examples of stupid HR decisions that did a great deal of harm.”

Hahahaha no doubt you were the smartest and most intelligent person in the room, and the ‘proper’ decisions that you brought up to leaderships attention were continually ignored.

And of course, PTO, bonuses, personal development programs, taking care of employee well-being are all ‘stupid’, not to mention its not HR that unilaterally make decisions that are given to all employees globally and cost millions of $$$s, who do you think signs that off?

But as you feel so strongly about all those things being ‘stupid’, you must never have taken advantage of them right? Perhaps you should give back your bonus awards in protest if you consider all the harm it did or if you don’t want to give the $$$ to Hock, donate it all to charity.

No? Didn’t think so.

Wow.. so many benefits which I've never used fully during my 9 years working for VMware.
Too late.. :( F* Hock took it away from us, and now we left with RSU crumbs.

Not we have intelligent decisions being made but in the style of St-lin.

Finding a benevolent dictator is a tough ask. Too bad Dell and SilverLake never searched for a CEO like that.

It’s hysterical the number of people complaining about ‘bad management’ yet at the same time were quite happy with their enriched working lives which included:

  1. A no questions asked WFH policy

2 ) Generous, or in the case of AMER, unlimited holiday

  1. 5+ additional days off work with EPIC days
  2. Take a Break days off giving an additional 4 days off work
  3. Free food/drink/snacks and subsidised canteens (for the minuscule numbers in office)
  4. Wellness allowance to spend on pretty much anything you wanted
  5. Internet allowance and supply of pretty much all home office equipment
  6. 5 days off to work for a charity of your choice
  7. Multiple DEI and ESG and other social causes to get involved with underpinned by the company
  8. Annual bonuses pools funded at 100% pretty much YoY (COVID aside) for over a decade to the point where people expected it
  9. Beyond normal levels of tolerance to cater to every individual whim, such as allowing dogs into offices, dietary provisions in restaurants (despite no one being on campus) etc
  10. Special events for multitude of holiday celebrations
  11. $$$$ spent on employee swag shipped around the world for events like WWSKO
  12. Take1/2/3 programs and $$$ for personal development, not just professional development
  13. And on and on and on, you all know the privileges you had.

No-one seemed to give two hoots about ‘bad management’ while they were riding the train of what made VMW an exceptional place to work, so maybe that shouldn’t be forgotten either.

All roads lead to Dell. Here is a bit of history for everyone.
As an ex-employee of Pivotal and VMware, the path to this is extremely obvious. Pivotal Inc. was predominantly owned by Michael Dell. He made VMware buy it to consolidate his portfolio. There were irregularities in that acquisition, as seen in the details of this litigation (https://www.pivotalsoftwarestockholderslitigation.com). There were lies all around on how this will be great for people. Like most other acquisitions of VMware, it didn't go well. A few months later, Patrick Gelsinger quit. Raghu was made the CEO, and that led to Sanjay leaving. In Raghu, Dell got a CEO who will toe their line. I personally felt both Patrick and Sanjay weren't that.
Then came the Dell's spinoff of VMware (https://reorg.com/dell-vmware/). This move gave Dell what he needed and the freedom to sell VMware.
VMware had very high operating costs, and it was hard to contain and manage effectively. Selling it to Broadcom meant Dell got a way to both cash and shares in BC. BC was known to cut costs and drive hard bargains with both employees and customers.
Now I hear the left of people of VMware saying how great BC is for them. Can't blame Raghu alone. He is part of a whole leadership team that didn't care to tell the truth ever.

think hard about the last 8 months.....think hard about that welcome letter.... think hard about how the process was handled...think hard about your offer (real longevity) in a company that operates like this????

I’m thought hard. And long. I realize now Hock is right. I show up, get my outsized RSUs per year, health insurance and don’t care for much else from my employer.

Maybe I retire 10 years earlier, that is the dream.

Completely agree with the post, VMware was an awful place with terrible leadership and a culture to match. Broadcom is the correct home for VMware. I recall when VMware acquired the company I worked for without fail every meeting (insert company name) is dead. Nobody has a job for life anymore, get out and find something better.

OP

It really dosnt matter who you blame that got thousands into this catastrophic situation....(past tense)....don't dwell on the past....its done!!!!!

What really matters is the future....and the future looks grim for anyone sticking around.

From here on out; if your faith is not already decided....think hard about the last 8 months.....think hard about that welcome letter.... think hard about how the process was handled...think hard about your offer (real longevity) in a company that operates like this????

Just a thought.....

I'm out !!!!!!

by a company that has zero respect for its employees

Take a look around to see how many different groups of people that can actually go in an out from any door. It's only the desk jockeys who are required to use the main entrance.

No respect, I tell ya.
