Request layoff

Is it possible for a salaried homeoffice employee to request/volunteer for a layoff from Walmart with severance without getting fired? Who would the request go to, HR?

So, volunteering for a layoff is called quitting. Quitting while requesting a severance package is a bold move, but worst case scenario I guess is they fire you and then you file for unemployment.

Speaking to HR is the last thing you want to do. The function of HR is to benefit the company, not the associates. See your manager if they are someone you can trust.

Wait until year end reviews if you are salary. The managers are doing calibrations now. Anyone with poor performance can potentially get cut. Most managers welcome someone that will volunteer for a low rating, but have that conversation on the down low.

Once initial calibrations are in, the directors will decide how many more low performers they need. It’s a bit of a game they play. It’s not fair by any means since the favored managers will get the ratings they want for their people, and the other managers will be forced to rate good performers poorly so the director group or VP group gets the number of low performers they need. The process is not fair and it plays into favoritism big time. The managers are held hostage to rate good associates low. I’ve been in meetings where they traded ratings, laughed and smiled at how clever they are.

Of the past situations I am aware of, you need to be having this talk with your direct manager. Depending how strong your relationship with them, and how they present it to their leadership, would determine what gets played out. In the past situations, there was a reduction in force with more than a few hundred effected. I think you would need a similar situation to even have a chance of getting your ask.

Based on company need and has to initiated from the employer not the employee.
