@1caf+1qcnshsa I agree with you that layoffs are nothing new and they have been happening in the past. However, there is something new about being laid-off and that's trying to get rehired again. In 2024, many companies will have hiring freeze. Why? Because many of those routine jobs, financial jobs, software coding jobs, lawyer jobs, creative workers, etc. will be done by Artificial Intelligence and those jobs will not be refilled again with new (human) hires. Those jobs will slowly become obsolete for humans. That means those who are laid-off in those job sectors will need to gain new skills. However, by the time the humans train themselves on those new skills, AI will have taken over those jobs as well. Therefore, it will be much more difficult then it used to be to get another job especially with AI is scanning your resume to see if you fit the job. And don't be surprised when your first interview is with an AI bot (on the computer screen) who will be monitoring all your facial expressions, your speech, etc. to gather data and then compare you to all other candidates. And only then it will pass it onto a human being for perhaps your second interview.
As more and more people are laid off and unable to find another job that will rehire them, you will start to see crime go up. Why? Not because the criminal is a bad person, but because the criminal has run out of all other options to put food on the table for the family, put a roof over the family, and pay the bills. Therefore, strict regulations are needed against AI, but that won't stop those who want to do the bad things. Just like the internet has changed every human life on this planet, so with Artificial Intelligence. For every one way AI will be used to do good, there will be five other ways AI will be used to do bad.
2024 is just the beginning. I'm not sure what will happen to future generations. Eventually humans won't be able to tell what's right and what's wrong. What's good and what's bad. What is true and what is false.

That's not entirely true. If a company put its employees first, provided good benefits and training resources, had incredible flexible strategies and finances, and stop bending over to their investors, layoffs wouldn't have to happen.

The C-Suite tends to forget that we're the ones making the company money. All they and the board does is kick up their feet and watch their money grow. All the end of the day, we are the ones who provide and plan a strategy, communicate and align the strategy internally, and then execute the strategy.

I got laid off from a job in 1988 - We were bought and none of us wanted to move to Mass.
I got laid off from a job in 1990 - They finally figured out that a failing computer company wasn't going to be able to make the next ISDN switch.
I got laid off from a job in 2002 - My division was sold to another company and they had a guy doing what I was doing and they didn't need two of us.
I am hoping to be laid off in early 2024 - finger crossed!

Layoffs are nothing new and they have been happening since forever.

As someone who is part of that statistic, I don't want to be a company who is purely an OEM anymore. All they do is copy each other because their suppliers gossip about, "Hey, we've identified this new demand for XYZ with our products. Would be a shame if you were left behind." If I made the decisions, I would be saying, "That's nice but we're coming up with our solution because our marketing data says otherwise."

The majority is still in IT, which means that there are plenty of jobs available. This is just a reshuffling between companies.
