Ferroglobe USA Metallurgical Inc. reported plans to lay off 37 employees in Selma.
According to the Alabama Department of Commerce's Warn notice list, the layoffs were announced on Dec. 18, and the facility was slated to initiate the layoffs Dec. 7.

The plant has a long history in Alabama. Furnace No. 1 was built In 1965 to supply ferrosilicon for the magnesium operation at the Selma plant site, according to the company's website. The magnesium plant was shut down in 1965, but the furnace continued to produce ferrosilicon (75%). In 1973, Globe Metallurgical Inc., a subsidiary of Interlake Steel, purchased the furnace from Calumet-Hecla. At that time, it was producing ferrosilicon but was converted to silicon metal. In 1974, furnace No. 2 was built by Globe and started operation in 1975 producing silicon metal.

Today, the plant features one 18.5 MW furnace and one 19.5 MW furnace, two baghouses, one crushing-screening line for silicon metal, two installations for densifying silicon fume and a robotic system for bagging silicon fume.
The plant is located at 2401 Old Montgomery Road, Selma.
Company representatives did not respond to BBJ requests for comment by press time.
The company is not the only one in the state to consider layoffs of late. Approximately 80 positions could be affected at a Butler County lumber plant after its Idaho-based parent company ceases some operations in January.
Boise Cascade Company, engineered wood products provider and distributor, issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act to employees at its Butler County facility Nov. 29 announcing the closure of its lumber production in January.
