Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Most are going remote

I suspect this will be to the chagrin of dell upper mangement.

And the hybrids should be happy with this news. They will get a legup for face time and promotions.

So why all the vitriol directed to remotes? Jealousy? Envy you don't have the backbone to stand up to management with the middle finger?
I figure it's a sort of self-loathing. They hate themselves for feeling so helpless to their own destinations.

I be been with Dell/EMC for 22 years. In 2006 I move from engineering to IT. At that time the majority of the team was in WeBo and I was in an insignificant office som 350 miles away. Then we offshored everyone in WeBo to Bangalore. Since then my teammates have all been in India. If I was to go into the big office near me it would be a 90 minute commute in the morning and 120 to 15p minutes in the evening, on a good day. I haven’t moved my home in 25 years. Y’all can pick whatever you want, hybrid or remote. I will be choosing retired!

I have my 1x1 this Wednesday and will be discussing things like promotions with him and in all honesty, I'm failing to see the incentive or point in going hybrid. I'm sure the Cafeteria will be half a-s and nothing how it was pre-covid. Promotions seem to have been on a stand still for years and years now. Raises are pretty pathetic these days. Thankfully I got a 9% raise the year after covid though. If my mngr says that promotions are on "standby" or hints that it's not likely anytime soon then I may just stay remote until he decides to promote me...

one thing everyone needs to remember that your manager and the director for the team get to approve if you are remote or not.. its not like last time where HR approved everyone.

so, based on Dan I leadership meeting, just because you want to be remote doesn't mean your manager can approve it. It's based on your group dynamics and if your needed in the office, you may not have the option to be remote.

Just go remote and quiet quit.
Not gonna promote me? That’s fine, then enjoy the bare minimum level effort I’ll put in. Relationships go two ways and if they want to treat employees like trash then we will respond with the same level of respect.

"come in or quit"
no. most of us are going to opt for remote.
You can keep going in for your yearly 3% and daily bootlicking.

“…things work better when most of us are in the office.”

Perhaps. But many of us are on global teams that will never share an office or common time zone. Efficiency looks different for us and this new mandate is going to destroy the balance that we’ve worked so hard to achieve.

"I asked for and got a severance package."

Do not do that. Management is not your friend. This could go horribly wrong.
Best bet is to quiet quit and look for another job.

"things work better when most of us are in the office."

You are just trying to rationalize your way through this. And It's always in a group think manner with you mindless drones. It will work better if all of us have to do it.
If everyone got the vax we'll all be safer. If all g-ns were removed we'll all be safer.

Some facts for you to digest:

Dell reduced it's employee space by 50% or more since COVID: selling land building and office space and reducing onsite amenities. None of that is coming back in any way shape or form.

Dell had record breaking financials when 90% of staff was WFH.

I have started going into the office after being mostly remote and I for one can say that things work better when most of us are in the office. The turnaround time to get things done is much quicker. Yes, you can be efficient being remote and some jobs can be done remote, however, sometimes you thinking it is efficient doesn't mean it is optimally efficient, ie. getting something done in day that could take just 3 of 4 hours, thus getting multiple things done. Yes, this may mean you can't do your laundry during work hours or take the dog for a walk or workout or whatever. Some will say they start earlier and work later when remote and that may be true, but are you getting more done or just taking longer to get things done that should take less time.

Sign up for remote, but go in 39 days a quarter to troll them.

When I worked for Dell everyone I interacted with on a daily basis was in India (I was in Austin). It made no sense for me to drive into an office at 4am so I could do phone calls with my team.

I left Dell last year when I was told to come into the office regardless. I asked for and got a severance package. In short if you want something, ask for it. All they can say is no and you are no worse off then you are now.

Managed to finally get i9 nearly 2 years ago. Don't see a promotion for at least 6 or 7 years at least. Remote for me just makes sense. I know a good number in my org in similar positions all thinking the same.

Just based on the week+ of this baking in, the attitude I get from colleagues, ranging from IC to SVP, is everyone not near RR or HOP (which is many of us) will be remote. My entire team will be. Pretty much everyone from other orgs I work with will be. Most of us don't have offices to return to, and with Dell not providing relocation assistance, or even willing to provide a list of offices available for hybrid work, the decision is easy. I also hear a lot of animosity from the management level about this decision. It appears it was made from a very high executive level (think: JC) with no (or ignored) input from anyone down the management stack. The truth is, countless teams are truly global now. They don't work in the same cities, and often not in the same countries. It may make sense for certain teams based in the same area to RTO, but for many it's a step backwards and will actually have a negative impact on productivity. We'll see how this plays out, but if the ELT doesn't loosen things a bit, I imagine this may backfire for them...

Depends upon where you are in your career. I am at the end, remote will allow me to pad the 401k and Roth 401k until Dell decides they don’t want me any more.
