Thread regarding Alphabet Inc. (Google) layoffs

Google’s Once Happy Offices Feel the Chill of Layoffs

What’s more, the layoffs have shifted the narrative that long defined working at Google — that it was more of a tinker’ community than a workaday office, where creativity and thinking out of the box was encouraged. That it was a fun, different kind of place to work.

All you Googler Sheep would feel 1,000% happier if you quit your useless boring Google jobs and move your backsides to West Virginia where you can work as a Coal Miner. There is absolutely no valid or logical reason why you should remain at Google. Now is the time to pack it up and move to West Virginia.

I read that article yesterday. It really comes off as Google employees assuming and thinking that their company is special and as such- they are as well. After spending more than 20 years in the tech industry my experience was that some tech companies will have a veneer they put out that makes it seem like they are all about caring about the wellbeing of their employees and in the case of Google- that they were the good guys.

The reality is that it is no different than any other industry or company. The company exists primarily to satisfy the financial expectations and demands of the board and investors. The board directs the actions of the executives and with it comes demands such as cost reduction and realignment of priorities. Employees are seen as numbers and if their position is no longer relevant or doesn't generate income then they will be laid off.

I learned this a long time ago. The sooner everyone understands this the better they can take care of themselves. Remember- your company is not your friend. It simply pays you to do a job that in turn makes them money. As such its important to always be prepared for the inevitable layoff- which happened to me on numerous occasions. Save your money. Take advantage of that upper level income. Invest. Strive to make it to retirement and thus reliance on those companies for your financial future.

That means they'll lay off fooling around with Rust and go back to using productive languages.
