Aside from money, what keeps you working for oil and gas? Are the roller coaster cycle and layoffs even worth the stress? The pension is nice if you can actually attain the tenure and not get laid off.

Yes. And that's what I did when taking the voluntary package. Despite complaints claiming the contrary, if you are in oil and gas, Enbridge is a sweet place to be. But the whole industry is not something I would hang my hat on through retirement. Unless you're a petrochemical engineer, consider sidestepping into a different domain.
If let go? Yes. I would likely look for something in hydro seeing as the government is forcing us that way and the pay is good. But I’d much rather stay here.
I like to eat and have a place to sleep (not with roommates). Maybe vacation once a year. Good luck doing that in the service industry.
