Bottom line, I believe your manager decides who stays and who goes.

Yes, there are other circumstances, but I truly believe your direct manager ultimately decides. Those who believe that the manager doesn't know until the final hour are deluding themselves. I believe they know and may know months in advance.

It depends on the level of your manager. If you report to a MD they probably have a say in the decision and know in advance. If you report to a C15 maybe they know too. C14 and below find out last minute.

I think there are variables. I recall working at another financial institution and I over heard one manager tell another manager that he had some hard decisions to make. That he had to pick a certain number from his team and it wasn't easy. Other manager told him he was instructed to do the same.
They are rarely blind sided. They usually are in the mix. They know for a while. Not all circumstances, but most times they know who will stay and who will go.

Ha! ask the C15s and above that got dealt new org charts full of names they’ve never seen before that have to quickly assess skill sets along with learning their teams new role and hand off their book of work to whoever took it over all while watching the team of strong performers they’ve cultivated get totally eliminated or get passed to a different leader who feels the same if they had any input. People very far removed from the day to day (like a team of consultants who are tasked with performing an academic exercise in how to restructure a global giant and applying what they learned while getting their mba last year to solve the problem) are making the org charts your leaders are inheriting. The people at Citi reviewing and approving the recommendations are as far removed from the day to day as the consultants. Loads of high ranking egos who thought they mattered have been checked. People like to think there’s some human connection component to this or that there’s someone that actually knows them watching out for them or having the grueling decision of having to make a choice or putting any pragmatic thought to it at all for that matter. The people actually making the decisions see a math problem of a determined number of boxes to fill and ratios to maintain, and then manipulate the inputs until it makes sense on paper.

Varies from team to team but most have not a clue outside of each phase and even some don’t know what is happening in the current phase.

I believe there is some level of knowledge. I think they are consulted and many play d-mb. The only time they don't know is if it affects themselves.

@OP+1qPPEfQX I agree. I don't trust what my manager says or his boss. I take everything at this company with a grain of salt. At this point, I only expect BS to come out of their mouths. LOL

I am a people leader in O&T and have had zero influence or input into any of these decisions, same goes for many of my peers. I believe most is being decided by C16 and up and BCG and they seem pretty clueless.
