Thread regarding Optum layoffs

All these “layoffs” that are mentioned aren’t happening?

People on this site have been guessing and warning about layoffs almost every Thursday of every month, and somehow there hasn’t been many major layoffs with any areas that I’m aware of. Ever since layoff started, I’ve only known one person that was like no, and they were able to find a different team in the company.

I’m not sure whether to take these post or not anymore because what is being said is simply not happening. We were supposed to have major layoffs last Thursday and this Thursday, and still no word…

Are people just saying this to be trolls? I just don’t get it.

You may be in the lucky department with Angels protecting you. Lot of layoffs happened, i was in layoff on November, my other friends were in the list too so you know how big Optum is and how many departments. So dont come to comment here being that Grandpaa, just be positive and happy ur job is still there.

Our area got hit in Nov and then last Thursday. 2 or 3 people each time. The idea here is small layoffs so that they as a company are not noticed laying off people to avoid the news. In my opinion, this site is and has been informative so you are not in complete shock when it happens in your area. Plus, management has no control over it but you can tell they make comments.

Definitely layoffs happening just depends on department, it’s a huge company. Some departments had their budgets cut by several million and will be needing to let people go. Contractors will obviously be first in line but depending on if there is any or not or what the budget looks like people may be losing folks. Uhc is getting sued for Medicare advantage and other sh---y stuff, along with change merger and other things they’re constantly trying to sc--w people over to hold on to as much money as possible

To the poster who mentioned P1 systems failing, which ones? I rarely look at the warroom portal/web page so I’m curious. I’m on a P2 system.

It was helpful to me to be on this site. I was ready when the “join me for a quick call” Teams message came. Only two people from my area (non IT) but I’ll tell you - it’s not a question of how many others when it happens to YOU. Thursdays have been “the day”, and expecting/predicting a big layoff when the company is trying to avoid the WARN act might be an error.

To the person below that wrote the long response regarding layoffs have been going on.

Well, obviously, any large companies like this will have constant layoffs, because part of their business is acquiring smaller businesses. so when you merge companies were slowly, not the acquired employees, hence the layoff culture.

But, UHG and Optum employees, are usually not the first ones that are laid off and this is just from my observation. I would say 90% of my team has been here for more than 10 years, that’s pretty crazy to think about and most companies you won’t see people staying for that long but people here stay for long. There’s probably a reason for that?

I’m not laughing for the company and I’m not denying that layoffs are happening, but let’s all agree that they aren’t as bad as everyone is trying to make them sound?

There are too many people on this site that either have an ax to grind or are chicken little. Optum is evil incarnate and will be firing you any day now.

I don't trust them one bit. I long since stopped trusting anything they say. I am sure there are some with knowledge here however they just get lost in the noise.

There will be layoffs. We are in a down cycle in tech and healthcare. Don't worry about it too much!

The layoffs are being done every few weeks at a vp level. Some vps are seeing 20% reduction some are seeing 70%. Since the start of 23 there are been around 15% headcount reduction acrossed Optum. Some departments still haven't been hit and some have been double hit. The company is in a tailspin P1 systems are failing left and right, insurance utilization rate (ie money paid to providers for services rendered) is at a record high. Cancer diagnosis (one of the highest cost of care diagnoses) are up 15%. Healthcare is in a bad spot.

The current C suite ruled thru a unprecedented time in Healthcare. During covid they were making money hand over fist. Everyone was paying their insurance dues and not going to the doctor unless they had covid. That ride is over and the bill is coming due. Somehow with ALL those accountants in the C suite no one thought "Hey we should squirrel away some of this money for a rainy day". Because at the end of the day the truth is none of them are very smart... Tiktok Boy, Dirk even Sir Witty all got there thru politics and corporate trickery.

UHG is staring down a dark tunnel. I personally doubt it will even be in the S&P 500 in 5 years. It won't be an Enron level collapse. More an eroding wave of cheap Indian labor and bandaid fixes on critical problems that will do it in.

PS Apple is pulling there contract by April.

There have been regular layoffs, especially when it's effected my department and people who I know. The company has over 300k employees with many business segments, so its not possible you will personally see a layoffs. Ever since I started I witnessed countless layoffs. Your either new to the company or you work in a high demand department.
