Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

What were the pivotal moments for you on this parabolic journey?

I've got no insight on where this thing is going, but I'm just curious...

I came to 2U in 2017 when we were on a rocketship to the moon. 2U acquired GetSmarter, my department was hiring like crazy, the stock hit $100, and 2U was paying Michelle Obama-sized speaker fees. I was impacted by one of the recent layoffs so I no longer have skin in this game. So just wondering, what are some of your highlights? What were the biggest mistakes or pressures (internal or external) that marked this precipitous downfall?

Personally, I remember the last company meeting in Vegas when everyone got matching 2U blue Converse All Stars and just thought: In what universe is this a good idea?

Cashing out $300k in stock and then watching the company nosedive. That was my favorite part.

When I started as an admissions advisor and my manager was constantly messing around with my goals, when I hit them, they would change, and he started talking to me like I was in danger of losing my job, all within the first few months of the job while I was out performing others. Lost motivation real fast, that guy has no business managing people, no skills but high pressure sales, and I quickly became aware of what a rip off 2U was. There’s a reason they hide behind the edX and university label, and I do not miss that place at all.

I came to 2U in 2018 as an admissions counselor and was promised upward mobility I never got. The job was a joke, my managers were all 5 years old compared to me, and I eventually left for a company and role that are a way better fit for someone approximately mid-career. I’m now in a mid-level senior position doing something that’s growing my career.

When my team was in the worst stage of pandemic burnout and we had to participate in an annual meeting with the theme of “love”!

The constant barrage of swag - hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts, water bottles, headphones, speakers and much more. I really enjoyed receiving these but i know this all had to be costly for the company and this $ should have been used elsewhere.

Along with All of the 2u interns, namely those under the age of 21, who had equal access to flowing booze. Whether the access was given during the given ( constant seeming) events or lots of bottlesl left freely on the common area counters and fridges....from floor to floor. I really wonder how much money was spent annually on just the booze?

It’s Wednesday so let’s get loose and have 3 “spontaneous” dance parties. Mimosas at 9 sure, beers at lunch why not, 4pm happy hour. It was the best office frat party I ever attended.

Post ID: @4cfa+1qK7tMxx, don't mistake the notion of " everyone thinks their life is a movie," with the reality television show of 2u called The Clown Show!

My pivotal moment was when I joined in early 2023 and I didn't meet my manager for at least a month and no one could even introduce me to my teams. I had to look in the org just to know who to reach out to for 1:1s. This past year was a living nightmare for me and I only stayed due to personal reasons. The executives are the worst, HR is the worst, just complete incompetence. I was Director plus role (which please, the roles are so bloated that is nothing at this company) and had three different managers since being hired because of layoffs and reorgs that promised me, "better leadership" just to be backfilled with someone who was already failing at their role. None of them were able to set strategic direction, and clear expectations. I never received any constructive feedback from my leadership, was consistently gaslit anytime I tried to change the same things they complained about, and then laid off while they schemed entirely behind my back on enacting the same change I advocated for.

This place is a joke and I am so disappointed I wasted any time working here. If anything, look at the past few months as your pivotal moment and move on from this entirely toxic, sad excuse for a company.

Trilogy spent millions bringing the entire company to Orlando in 2019, complete with surprise events at Disney, swag, booze. 2 months later the acquisition was announced. Tell me they didn’t know at the company meeting…buttering us up to commit to a sinking ship.

Stock didn't quite hit 100 but we were all hoping it would while we were at the company meeting.

I mean, who could forget Adam Neumann basically taking off his shirt on stage at a Company Meeting. That will forever be seared into my brain, unfortunately.
