I have only 3 years of work experience, I’m young and afraid of making stupid decisions, I know I’m overthinking this but hey it’s a big decision for all of us.

Unless you have a gig in your pocket, take the offer and continue looking for something better. BC won’t look good on your resume 5 years out and your skills might get dated. So, be strategic. The job market is rough right now but not impossible. You will be in a stronger position if you are employed, even by BC. In the interview you can explain that BC has given you a good offer, you appreciate it and your skills are needed. None the less, you are looking for a wider, bigger growth opportunity than BC can provide long term. You’ll look smart and aggressive.
Broadcom Software is a place where older employees wait for their upcoming retirement.
As a young person, you do need to find a job at a company that's prepared to invest in new product development and train employees on new skills. Neither will happen at BC.
If you decide to wait, the good news is you have time. But do move out, ASAP.
The job market, at least in the US, is pretty brutal right now. I started looking for a new job the same day of the acquisition announcement. It still took 3 months and 100's of resumes. Everyone I know who is out of work is not having any luck at all. If you have a job- keep it. If you don't like the job, start looking for a new one while still having one.
young, 3 years? take the money and go travelling
Bit scared a bit too late. Should have thought about that 18 months ago.
Where are your based?
EU person here. Why do you think about taking severance? Is it because you see a nice amount of money (severance) or you don’t want to be a part of BCM?
If it is the money, then think it twice. You might not get more by staying in the long run.
If you don’t want to be a part of BCM, are you in a country that will pay you unemployment? If so, calculate severance + unemployment for 4 months without a job - if it is around what you are earning and pays the bill, don’t inflict yourself to stay.
Of course it is your decision and will impact your life and not mine, but i trust you ll do good !
hold your job, prepare for interview.
resign or volunteer for layoff, once you have offer.
isn't it simple enough?
btw, i bet you will have lots of opportunity for layoff volunteer in broadcom
no worry about it, and your co-worker will be grateful
Agree with everyone else. The best time to look for a job is when you already have one. Proof: I found a new job while employed at VMW within 2 months of the initial Broadcom acquisition announcement.
What is the reason you would take severance and be out of work in this environment?
You do not have a lot of experience so your severance wont be significant.
I would strongly suggest against opting to be unemployed and looking for work
If you are young, you have time to recover from bad decisions (usually). I took severance not long after the .com bubble blew up, granted this is not as bad, and I was out of work for over a year. The question you need to ask yourself is, do you want to risk being out of work for a while (who knows how long) or stay with BC while looking for other work. Think about it for 24 hours and make your decision. If I had to make the decision over again back in 2002, I would have stayed and looked for other work just so I could keep paying bills and building my savings.
