How many jobs did you have to apply for before finding a new job? How many interviews?
Just wondering…
Over 600 applications. 30 interviews & final round interviews. 1 offer - laid off again- gave up and started sole proprietor contracting business. The job market for 50+ is very different than 40 and younger.
Used my network and connections, applied officially for 2 roles. Had 4 interviews with 1 position and decided to end application on the other role. Got the first role offered within 4 weeks of leaving. Totally agree to call out EMC vs Dell. I had an EMEA sales role and have walked into similar, however in my view you may need to reset your salary expectations as EMC paid well….
Good advice. Can you please list names of companies you interviewed or landed ?. Would definitely help as emc-ers will always help each other. Thank you
Probably about 50-60 applications over the course of 3 months. Several screens with recruiters, but most were not productive. Most of them are quite young and afraid to think outside of a literal job description. Also very unprofessional, for the most part. They talk a good game and then ghost you.
Finally was contacted by a recruiter who laid out the interview and hiring process. I thought "whatever" and then it all went like he said it would! Lower pay, but I'm in the final stretch, so good enough.
I’m going to be a minority here. Laid off in August after 6 years, blindsided so I wasn’t looking. Mass applied that first week, didn’t wait around. Probably put in over 175 apps that I actually was qualified for. Landed about 19 phone screens, 9 second interviews, 4 finals and 2 offers within about 30 total days.
You find someone in your circle who has gone through it. Specifically someone that is a hiring manager in the field you are in. Mock interview out the a-s. Dell doesn’t look bad on a resume and I can attest to that. Know your network and utilize it. If you’re looking for a sales role, sell yourself and your skills. The world is all about SaaS now, how can your skills transfer? I saw a lot of you have the sales experience, but no SaaS experience.
Location is a big factor. If you’re in RR or Texas, the market is saturated. I have seen it take people longer to get hired there vs Nashville or OKC. If you’re open to relocation make it clear. I landed an incredible job with a great culture. Being laid off as others have said is a blessing in disguise.
rrm+1qGmCnWf this is very true, i was shocked at perception of Dell in the market.
A piece of advice I was given and I have given to others with success. I know this is going to start fight, but I'll say it anyway. If you worked at EMC separate at your EMC experience from your Dell experience on your resume and LinkedIn. As another commentator said being at Dell too long shoots you in the foot. However, a lot of ex-EMCers look fondly at EMCers and will help you out in ways you may not expect.
Probably around 10-15 over 3 months. I was being quite selective as to what roles I was applying for. #1 priority was a good leader that is inspiring, #2 was the organisation.. what are they doing? How are they performing? What is their reputation for how they treat employees and #3 the ability to progress through performance.
Of the 15 I probably interviewed for maybe 8 of those position making final rounds for 4. Overall the whole process was extremely enjoyable, you just need to stay calm, keep looking, and enjoy every second of it.
Ive meet a lot of great new people, enjoyed quality time with my family, and in retrospect this has been one of the best experiences of my life, especialy considering some of the undesirables I had to work with daily.
Life is good. 💪
Over 200 applications. Only three company interviews. I feel VERY fortunate to have landed a new role.
