Thread regarding VMware layoffs

VMware Ireland

Anybody else feel quite trapped by all the info they given to us. RTO won’t be strictly mandated but management have said regional leaders want more people in office?? Managers themselves don’t know how to clarify it either..

And with prod volume going away to partners soon, only T1 and PREM volume staying in GS, I can imagine overtime they might decide they don’t need as many TSE’s depending on how many customers will stay.
And there is a greater push for TSE’s to do cross-skilling across various SME, this was how GS used to be few years ago and there were some issues with that way of working.

Honestly it’s so tricky to figure this all out…. Feeling very uncomfortable with all this change

Pretty obvious some of the people here have not been unemployed recently, if ever.

People are in for a rude awakening.

and its not unknown to let the weekly payments build up and collect once a month.

Confusion perhaps between signing on and collecting payment. Payments are collected weekly.

As mentioned payments can be sent directly to bank account but this is an exception for people with mobility issues or caring duties etc, not something you can apply for cuz it's easier.

The weekly in person payment collection method is used to detect and prevent fraud.

The schedule is weekly.

Not true and can also be negotiated and paid directly to Bank Account based on your circumstances.

+++++++ better than signing (clocking) in 5 days a week to clean up the BC mess with skeleton team, only to be left go in 6 months without the same terms?????

Standard signon is monthly , not weekly : https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/unemployed-people/signing-on/#ldfb7b

It might be weekly for certain people, but that's likely months down the line. dont sweat about the small stuff.

"I'm in two minds but hate the idea of signing on every wk. No matter how short the period is, it's too bleak."

You'll have notice + the length of severance (6-9 weeks ) before you can sign on.

I dont see them being too harsh on us - let the payment build for a month and collect.
Once a month is ok - they'll give us the signon schedule.

The letter will be very vague like it was in the US and once you accept the offer the RTO mandates will come in and at that point they will say you can quit without severance... BE WARNED

To my colleagues in Cork.

Tomorrow's email will be expected for some and not for others.

Whatever the content and personal decisions made. Wishing everyone all the best in their future.

Personally, I am out whatever the subject line.

"In cork I expect a silent stream of resignations over the year"

Then why pass up on the package with the tax reliefs available. If ok tenure then could be more lucrative to leave now and not work for rest of year if you can while looking or doing other things. What's the point of turning down package while planning to hand in notice within next few months.

Not trapped at all, there's a good package on the table, get the f@ck outta there. The sun will still rise next month

Leaving VMware would have been a difficult decision while leaving Broadcom isn't. If the package on offer keeps someone going for a period of time they are happy with while on the look out, and it's equal or greater than broadcom package for the same amount of time, easy choice for many.

Seeing how things arent going too well and the future looks bleek to say the least, wouldn't question anyone's decision to leave.

Hope everyone makes best decision for them over the next few days.

No mass exodus in cork? depends on the org - GS will 100% take a hit.

Depends squarely on the contract offer / Tenure / outgoings . If your running costs are covered for a worst case scenario job hunt duration, and you want to leave for valid reasons (WFH, SHIFT, FUD re next 12 months etc) , why would you stay in seat to search for a role - if you want to leave, monday offers the best possible terms .

“half the site could be gone in 4 weeks, easily?“

Tbh there were will no such mass exodus, everyone still needs a pay check. In cork I expect a silent stream of resignations over the year. I know many planning to leave only after they’ve secured a job somewhere else

We already know the number of people going to be affected on Monday including transitional roles. As the package offer is good and many are looking to get out, there is chance that half the site could be gone in 4 weeks, easily? It's not that much more compared to those already being affected.

For those who remain, it's going to be an even tougher 6-12 months. It's not as if they are going to backfill during that time.

If you are renting, move out of the 50-mile radius. If you can't, then do hybrid or WFH. Many still WFH full-time even after Jan 1st. Most, if not all, of "regional" management aren't even on site and WFH. If you are getting cut, you will, regardless if you are RTO or WFH. The benefit of being in the office is you spend the majority of the time collaborating with people. 8 hours flew by at the hallways, coffee stands, meetings that you aren't even getting invited or restroom.

I was 90% sure of my decision, mostly based on the non flexible dictatorship 5 day in office.

A carrot was dangled with the illusion of at least a hybrid week.

Consulted and questioned about said carrot.

It is an illusion!!! If you, like me thought there may be hope, and were reconsidering your decision.... don't!!!!!

I am back to original POA.....

Here’s the deal. They want you in office but will tell you after you turned down the severance so that you will quit without severance. They will tell you whatever comes out of their mouth that day and change it later. They don’t want many employees. HT said, “38,000 employees freaks me out.” He will cut until he is no longer freaked out. That’s a long way down. Your managers will also tell you whatever they think can save themselves. This is the reality.

ah lord jesus here comes the grammer police

Yes. This is not like spelling where people know what you're talking about even if you misspell something. If you misuse grammar and cannot get your point across clearly then you are just creating larger confusion.

Everyone should read their offer letter carefully on monday, unless its written in your contract you are allowed to work from home without any obligation to come into office you best believe that BC can change their mind easily..

Kids, grammar matters. This can be read many different ways.
"Unless it's written in your contract you are allowed to work from home"
"Unless it's written in your contract 'you are allowed to work from home'"

It appears you meant the first, but the latter is the correct one. Working from home is not how BC works. You are not to work from home unless BC says you can.

Simply put , Hock lies. Whatever is in your letter aside from base salary is TBD. He will make your RTO 5 days a week. You have been warned by someone going through it firsthand. Don’t expect “reasonable”. “but it takes 2 hrs each way … “ nope. In his own words.

“If you live within 50 miles of an office, you get your butt in here,"

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/broadcom-ceo-tells-vmware-workers-130000290.html

What wasn’t reported was the additional snark comment qualifier - “unless you can walk on water”

Getting let go in a couple of years at a third of the severance does.

Bothers the bejaysus out of me. #dilemma

I asked my manager about this because it was my understanding that wfh all 5
days would be allowed but my manager has said it’s a more hybrid like model.

In other words, the company is lying to your geography, like they lied to North America.
They are inducing you with other lofty promises (such as bigger bonus percentage, RSUs (maybe?)). This statement, too, is probably a lie to induce you to NOT look for another job, and stick with what you have because it's easy to slide into another job that doesn't sound too bad.

In reality, as soon as you seal the deal, BC will probably come in and say, like they did to NA, "We do not have a WFH culture. Get back into the office."

Hock is a liar among his other terrible qualities. Even if your offer letter says WFH, that doesn’t matter. He lies to governments, he will lie to you. He simply wants everyone in the office, full stop.

““Unless confirmation the WFH is a viable option in the welcome letter Monday, as we have been told so far only verbally... take it with the proverbial pinch. If nothing is in there, it can change back to RTO at the drop of a hat...despite Hock giving up the lease on 1 of 4 buildings so far...””

I asked my manager about this because it was my understanding that wfh all 5 days would be allowed but my manager has said it’s a more hybrid like model. You might still be be expected to come in 1-2 days a week, while that flexibility is appreciated, anyone that lives in Ireland knows how much of a hassle it is to travel in Ireland given its geographical makeup. And if you happen to live quite far away from office you simply can’t be arsed to drive 3 hours up and down. Really an impossible situation for me, I’m considering taking the severance and going abroad to look for other opportunities now. They need to explicitly state how many days in office they expect to make decision making easier for us.

My org in Sofia is still working from home, only occasionally badge-ing in and out. No consequences so far, no one cares.

Individuals at Cork Management with high-value cars, or multiple cars, demand Engineers to work from the office, contrasting with Technical Support Engineers who mostly drive older cars. The commute is undoubtedly more manageable for those with a weekly salary surpassing a TSE's monthly earnings.

At this stage, it's crucial to recognize lessons from the past regarding BC. Caution is warranted as significant changes loom for 2000 individuals in Cairo and Costa Rica. Although Cork remains operational for now, the uncertainty regarding how many will reject the offer on Monday prompts BC to adopt a more flexible WFH approach. Despite the allure of WFH, Cork Management emphasizes the centrality of the Cork location to the business, mirroring past situations with VMware. Acceptance might lead to increased office presence and potential job insecurity, as indicated by anticipated declines in customers and case volume. The looming shutdown of Cork within 12-18 months further complicates matters, urging careful consideration before signing any commitment.

I thought the only criteria for commute was 50 miles regardless of how long it would take?

Surely it’s not different in Ireland as BC likes to standardize and apply the same thing every where.

Assume if you are a full time employee and live within 1.5 hours of an office you will have to return. If you were assigned to an office then it will be immediate. That's how it is here.
