Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

THANK YOU TO THOSE THAT GAVE US A HEADS-UP ON LAY OFFS!!!

I want to thank those that have been brave enough to come onto the site and give us all a heads up on layoffs, and when they were coming.

  • -2, I guess the meeting point between the " hear and the hear not's" is simply that it is helpful to those to whom it is helpful and not to those it is not. Such is life!

But people are able to discern for themselves and - and this is a Big and- all leadership need do is become transparent! Enough with with the excuses!!

I can tell they are inaccurate after the fact, not bc I knew ahead of time. Believe me or not, if anyone offered a compelling argument that SVPs posts help more than they harm- I’m up for listening. I still haven’t heard anything but hero worship and that individuals actually getting laid off appreciate some warning. Nothing regarding the majority of folks who are just unnecessarily sent into total panic. I am one of those people, as are many of my colleagues. I just hope that folks posting take into account the full spectrum of the impact of their posts. I get that you appreciate it. Cool for you. For a good chunk of people, who as I said hear the rumors whether they are on the site or not, it’s an unnecessary negative impact. Not trying to silence anyone here- I am just hopeful that SVP and those like them might pause and consider.

And while we're on the subject, Post ID: @1umc+1qCx758i, do we really know YOUR true motivations?!
Give me a break!

Post ID: @1umc+1qCx758, then by all means-- post the "accurate information" that you seem to know/have, on the site! Bc, it seems like you are equal to, if not the actual problem around here!
Your post accuses other posters of "not often being accurate" and that readers come to this site bc " it's like watching a train wreck?!" and that one way or another, they hear about what was posted on this site even if they don't read it for themselves?!
People are neither stupid, helpless or incapable of drawing their own conclusions! So while you paint this picture that people are being fed misinformation at times, you seem guilty of saying nothing at all to help provide beneficial information.
Unlike within the 2u media feeding system, you do not have the opportunity to drive the narrative. That is why people come to this site predominantly! So, you may as well stop trying to whitewash @ here and actually help! Provide timely facts... like some on the site (namely SVP) tend to do,

But the details are often NOT accurate- and trust that people coming here come here not just bc some truly wished they knew the exact day and time a random group of people would be laid off and want to worry about if it will be them. This site is like being pulled to watch a car crash. Additionally- people want to “know” what others are talking about here bc there is always gossip and people want to see it for themselves (and/or regardless of if they come to the site, they hear from colleagues what is on here - often NOT by choice). I just don’t think we need to make those like “SVP” into heroes automatically. Do you really know their true motivations for posting? Could it be just a power/ego trip of being “in the know” and fawned over by people on this site? Do people posting give a sh-t about the harm and stress their posts might do to the very people they are claiming to be “helping”? More is coming soon on structure, next steps, a plan and how this was a part of it -but it would not have made sense to have that conversation pre-layoff bc everyone would just be distracted by them not having happened yet.

Post ID: @1gpx+1qCx758i, the mere fact that those same "3k" people know about and assumably frequent the site titled " 2u the lay off" answered the question of whether or not there tends to be Value in accurate insights @ specific timeframes of layoffs.
If this was a different type of site, it would be more reasonable to assert that a heads up, in more specific terms, surrounding timing may be a pot stirrer.
Whether or not the specifics, as to who will be/was impacted, is immaterial.

What is important is that significant amounts of individuals (notably at the lower levels - and not at the executive levels) are being released at what has now become regular intervals. What is not occurring (at regular intervals, or at all) is open discussion about what actually has to happen to either rebuild or scrap/close the doors for good and for All!

Therefore, all that is left are layoffs, one after the other, after another. And so, yes--people want to know accurate details, on the heels of what appears to be the inevitable event--and when the next one will occur.

I’d love to hear from some folks who were really stressed over these past 2 days and then weren’t a part of the layoff. Was it helpful or harmful to you?

I mean technically everyone already had warning - from Paul’s statements in Nov/December. The question is it really worth the stress to get 3k ish people highly stressed and unable to sleep just bc they now know it’s happening in the next 2 days- and ultimately only a fraction (2-300) of the people who get stressed by things posted here actually get laid off. I’m not at all saying the lay off isn’t a big deal and that warning for those ACTUALLY getting laid off maybe would be nice (but then isn’t that the same thing as being told you are being laid off?). Is the panic of so many people worth it? What does knowing 2 days ahead of time- without knowing whether it will be you- actually help with? People were already taking steps to be ready when the time came.

All the SE murmurs were wrong about this one. That’s now got people worried there are going to be MORE layoffs for SE when no reliable source has said that in any way and there were already tons of cuts to every level of SE in October (ICs, Managers, Directors and VPs).

It’s just a vicious cycle. Work hard if you choose to, leave if you choose to, stay but look and prepare for what’s next if you choose to. Take positive and proactive action. Intense stress over 2 days bc of a post with inacccurate details (ie “every department”) is not good for anyone bc there is literally no action that you can take within those 3 days that could change the outcome anyway. It just ends up making EVERYONE feel like sh-t.

Post ID: @cah+1qCx758i, it seems like that's an individual decision, but at the end of the day...people want/appreciate the facts being dealt to them straight out!

Would Chip have preferred to know that the board was going to oust him with some level of direct knowledge beforehand, or have it come absolutely with warning?

Honest question: do you think all the handwringing and stress yesterday for folks who didn’t end up getting laid off and basically couldn’t sleep/function from the stress is truly worth having 24-48 hours lead time that you might be laid off when eventual layoffs were already expected during Jan/Feb? I mean it’s nice to feel like we’d get a heads up but what that help anyone that outweighs the stress it causes for 3k+ people?

Yes, tgank you!
BRAVERY +++ INTEGRITY!!!
2 key characteristics that have always been lacking in 2u as an organization/leadership.
That's why there's always been this "can't put my finger on it....wobbly" feel to this place.
