I've been with Nielsen as a data scientist for 10 years. I see others with 6 months of experience being promoted. I know if I ask for a promotion, I'll be gone sooner than I think. Should I just continue being used by this company? anyone in the same position?

My skin shines like porcelain and yet I am still on the plantation with you. EVERYBODY is on the plantation. You are on a plantation.
Did you join Nielsen right out of school through one of their Emerging Leaders Programs?
I left Nielsen a few years ago after working in Data Science for about 5 years. One thing I noticed during my time there is that those who joined Nielsen via an Emerging Leader graduate scheme and finished the entire two year program would progress through promotions quicker than those who didn't go through that program. The ELA program recruits very competitively from a pool of candidates with no real-world experience. They then get wined and dined and are given interesting rotational opportunities to work in different offices throughout the world. After they finish the program and join Data Science, they are fast-tracked through promotions.
Meanwhile, those who joined Nielsen and didn't go through the ELA program wouldn't progress as quickly and wouldn't be given such special treatment. I had the impression that leadership would not even consider you to be worth talking to if you did not go through the ELA program. You could join Nielsen having FAANG caliber talent and work experience and an academic background from the Ivy League, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, MIT or UC Berkeley and still be treated as a second-class employee because you didn't go through that ELA program as your first job out of school.
My advice for you is to leave. Do not fool yourself thinking that you can play a pivotal role in turning around a dying company because the company is too busy dying for anyone in leadership to care about you.
"My bet is that your skin doesn't shine like porcelain, that's why they didn't promote u."
- You are literally causing Nielsen of Racism. This is a serious accusation. Remember that this forum is monitored by Nielsen's HR, they might know who you are and fire you if you are still there.
wait till u get severance pay, they're going to show u the door sooner or later.
if they didn't promote u when Nielsen was doing far better they're not going to do so when it's going down in a free fall. My bet is that your skin doesn't shine like porcelain, that's why they didn't promote u.
Did you get lots of congratulations on your 10th anniversary on social media? I see people being congratulated by their colleagues for staying on for 7+ years even when they haven't moved one inch. Success now is "Congrats, you have survived the layoff."
AT LEAST FOR NOW!
How confident are you in your professional network? Jobs are hard to come by, good jobs even harder......
At least ur manager didn't call u ethnic slurs
They want u out without severance pay. Or if u are h1b they want ur work with little money. Anyone with no promotion within 3 years should find themselves a new job.
Find a new job. Promotions are about politics, not hard work or dedication. They don't like you. I'm sorry to be blunt. You have to eat, breath, sleep Nielsen and/or you have someone to advocate for you. If you're really good at your job and you're not an a$$ l**cker, you'll not be promoted. It's been 10 years, it's time to move on.
don't worry about promotion if you're able to pay the bills.
No promotions for anyone in the foreseeable future.
