Thread regarding Micron Technology Inc. layoffs

Just started as an R&D engineer

My boss is super nice, setting me up for a promotion to the Senior Engineer in 2-3 year, then for the Leadership career path.

That is nice of your supervisor. Go micron. Also, they should explain that you will be an executive vice president within 4 years. 7 years ago micron had a great retirement package (as Micron noted). The rule of 65. How old you were plus years of experience. If that total was greater than 65 you need to retire. aka leave the company we want new college grads (NCG). I would suggest you take this as a lessons learned. Enhance your skills quickly and move on to another real company.

Try not to let the Micron culture program you.

Is it okay to say you don't want to do company-related travel?

The flexibility for time away from work is very dependent on you role and who is your manager. If you are an equipment technician the expectation is that you are present during your shift to work on the equipment. Now if you are a software engineer it is up to your leadership as to how accommodating they will be. Keep in mind that the your direct manager may be totally cool with you taking off for family events, but his boss may not be amiable to it and when the annual review comes around your boss may learn that his boss noticed how often you were gone and your stock and bonus will reflect it.

Travel will likely have no impact on promotion.

Does travel have any impact on promotions?

So it doesn’t sound like a big deal to go to school events— is that right?

"Do family obligations impact promotions or is Micron considered a family friendly company?"

They can for sure, it is very dependent on your management. The over all work/life balance is very much at the control of your lower level management.

"I've heard normal cycle for promotions is more likely to be 5-7 years and about every third year they will suspend raises and/or IPP."

For early career promotion a 3 to 7 year cadence is reasonable but after you get to the 4 level (for example Senior Engineer) in the GJS there are not too many more promotional opertuninities. Most engineers top out at Senior Engineer. Many will say that you are better of going for management than trying to progress beyond E4.

Suspension of pay increases and bonuses should be an expectation during any slight downturn in the market.

LOL... Is your boss an M3 or M4? If they are not they are just telling you what they want you to hear. The promotion to E4 in R&D is not easy. Unless things have changed it requires a patent. When I was a leader in Fab4 the IT, Data, and PCS teams where battling getting that requirement relaxed as getting a patient on IT solutions requires you to reveal your IP and is nearly Impossible to prove patient infringement.

Bro, do yourself a favor, work at Micron for a couple of years, ride the next wave of DRAM appreciation, gain experience, and then bail before the next DRAM downturn comes.
Any promise Micron makes you is just BS to keep you there for as long as possible, while paying you as little as possible.

Depending on your education level and professional experience, Senior Engineer in 2-3 year in Micron R&D would be rather extraordinary. I'd ask for examples of his success in doing this before I put to many eggs in that basket. You will find lots of M1s and M2s that have recommended promotions for the same engineer year after year to be denied by upper management.

A moving target for promotion is a common Micron leadership stall tactic for decades at Micron in general and particularly for R&D. If you don't see it happening be ready to bail out of R&D, get the promotion, then go back to R&D if that is still the job you want.
