People who were laid off, how is the job search going? Are you having any luck yet? I've been doing some looking and I was not encouraged by what I saw. The days of the employee job market seem to be long gone by now. I didn't go too deep, though, so I hope it's better than it looked at first glance.

Consider the following:
- Market timing of limited Q4 openings
- Ghost positions/postings
- Job opportunity vs job fit/desirability
- Mass layoffs up this year vs last year; supply vs demand
- Pay is down in tech in general. Not always the case, but certainly the norm.
And just jumping ahead of some troll… this is a layoff board. RTFM.
That said:
- There are options but it’s much harder than previous years to find them
- Patience, January will be better than December
- Prepare for those opportunities now. Resume. Social media. Work samples and/or stories as permitted, interview questions, company profiles/lists, personal skills, and take care of you and family
- Don’t feel bad for not getting a FT BC offer. I know just as many people unhappy as happy right now. Varies by team.
I have started applying but mostly getting rejection emails, I think some of it is auto rejections. I will still continue to apply, hiring is usually slow around holidays. I am planning to get unemployment benefits starting feb.
Have started to look the last couple of weeks. Obviously depends on your skills/role but considering time of year was surprised at how much opportunity there is, especially around Cloud, AI (no surprise) and even infrastructure. Plenty of contract work as well.
Probably worth taking a deeper look at what’s being advertised and dive into the job descriptions as opposed to job titles, I found some pretty creative job titles that didn’t reflect the roles they represented!
Only real challenge I’ve found so far is salary expectations, does seem to be a slump there on what companies are prepared to offer, so be careful there to not get screened out by recruiters.
Best of luck in your search.
Hiring for addition to team roles is always slow in Q3 and dead in Q4 because of EOY budget overruns and interviews are difficult to schedule for backfills because half the people who are needed for the loop are away on holiday.
Research when your target companies’ Q1 starts because that is when hiring managers have fresh budgets. In the meantime, polish your resume, revive your network and take care of your stress levels so you can go into interviews in 2024 looking for what you want vs running from what you don’t want.
Lots of jobs. Had a dozen interviews but don’t like them. Thinking of semi-retirement. This Broadcom fiasco has probably given me ptsd
Lots of jobs out there but majority do require onsite or hybrid
With the holidays it’s not the best time for job hunting. I declined FT offer from BC and had one interview yesterday, but I’m not keen to work immediately yet, instead I’d take some time off work to just really think about what I’d like to do next
