Agreed. If you were close to retiring it's the best thing ever.
It's not stupid if you want to retire anyway.
I made it very clear to my manager that I wanted to be laid off and he made it happen (the "we aren't taking volunteers" statement notwithstanding). And to be clear for my entire time at QC I never got anything less than a "performing above his level" review, regardless of how they kept reworking the numbering system.
What would have been stupid for me would have been having to stay waiting for the next layoff or having to quit without a package when I wanted to leave.
Why do you wish that? Are you stupid or what?
