Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Are the RSUs worth it to you

For those who came in with FTE offers to BC from VMW (not you native BC RSU w*ores), are the RSUs worth to you to stay? RTO 5 days a week, threats of layoffs for the next 2 years, company culture that was wiped out in 2 weeks, many of our customers likely looking at other alternatives? Be honest, is there one single reason to stay beyond the RSUs, and are they enough to keep you there?

It's not just the welcome RSUs. Lots of people have a significant amount in converted RSUs as well, that are worth far more than when they were granted. We're not going anywhere for a while.

Am a P6 in VCF div, took an external offer and am leaving shortly. Want what I work on and where I work to mean something more than the lure of RSUs. Will miss VMW, it was really special but it's gone now and so am I.

Life is too short to spend 3hrs / day commuting 5x a week.

That is about 1 full month, 24/7 straight of you sitting in your car.

How much is 1 full month of your life worth? It’s a personal decision of course, but for me, it isn’t worth it.

I know I do my job effectively as hybrid, there is actual evidence. Thanks COVID.

So consider you get 50k of RSU over for 4 years. After tax that's 24.75k over 4 years, so 6k per year in your bank extra.... I'd much rather have a higher salary.

Your assumption is incorrect. You should get a refresh 50K every year so the vest stagger and addup.
year 1 net 24.75K
Year 2 49.5K
Year 3 74.25K
Year 4 99K

Then 99K net or 200K gross indefinitely. THAT is the golden handcuff. If you reject the offer, Can you really find another job today in the UK that will give you a 200K raise over 4 years? And if you don't sell them they most likely keep growing in value.

Nope, that's why I took severance.
Good luck, I hope all of you staying for the RSUs don't get laid off before they can vest.

For us old enough to have lived through the roaring dot-com 1990's, the promise of stock performance is all too familiar. We worked like mad under poor conditions and for weak pay and benefits because "we would all be millionaires soon" after our Cool New Thing dominated the market, and we cashed out our shares. Only a few ever realized that dream though. Looking at you, Bezos and Musk.

Yes, AVGO is already public and has a good record of return so far. But go into this with your eyes open. A LOT can happen in the stock market. If you're relying on AVGO shares as the crown jewels in your compensation, you might be disappointed if the market is off (for reasons far beyond anyone's control, even HT's) on the day that you really need that money.

100% no in the UK, the RSUs won’t be worth it for many unless they are at L7, maybe L6. For anyone below that then the RSUs after tax are not worth it at all, especially when you consider the likely blemish on your CV that is Broadcom.

Personal Opinion. No. Not in the UK anyway.

Assuming it puts you over the higher tax band but below 100k
Tax - 40%
NI - 2%
Employeers NI - 13%
That's 55% of it gone to the tax man. More if over 100k.

If you don't sell straight away and make money (3K gain) on those Stocks. Then add Capital Gains tax on top.

The bank does not consider unvested RSUs when getting a mortgage.

So consider you get 50k of RSU over for 4 years. After tax that's 24.75k over 4 years, so 6k per year in your bank extra.... I'd much rather have a higher salary.

There called handcuffs for a reason

@prw+1q1JXRMP - Europe gets half the RSUs compared to the US.

Depends. If you are already financially independent, and some working these jobs already are, the money is important mentally, but one would be a fool to sell irreplaceable days of their lives to work in a job where they didn’t like the company, respect the goals of management, didn’t like the work, didn’t feel they were growing or where the internal tension of the company causes mental unrest.

It is admittedly a luxury to make decisions from this point of view. But this is a reality in Silicon Valley today for some people who have been working awhile.

There has to be more to it than just the pay because you don’t get those days of your life back.

Yes. It's worth it. I am so happy DEI, OCTO, EPIC are gone. They contributed to VMW downfall. We lost sight that our true value was at least $70b. If we're the best of the best, why couldn't we drive our value up? Answer: because we did not even believe we're worth that much.

Had heard of "laughing all the way to bank".
Here we are "crying all the way to bank"

I don't mind.

Yeah - if they vest before getting laid off. A tedious relationship on a day to day basis. Incentive structure rewards getting rid of people…oops, I mean costs.

**** I work to make a living

I love the "you pathetic losers who only work for money. I'm so much better than that" theme of these posts but I can't figure out why you bother to post this?

Best post of the day! Work is not who you are or your values. Take that BC money and improve your life or the life of others, retire early and volunteer. If you think corporate jobs and your morals mix, you are naive and I was also once like that too until I figured out the freedom and life options RSU's can mean. Take the money, Help your team and start something in the future where you are in charge of your life.

Maybe. We'll see. Having said that, I work to make a living not to have leadership blow smoke up my a-s and hold my hand while I cry. I have a full life outside of work so, yeah, getting paid a bunch more makes the work annoyances go away and the real life that much more enjoyable.

I love the "you pathetic losers who only work for money. I'm so much better than that" theme of these posts but I can't figure out why you bother to post this? It's an anonymous board so you don't even get the credit for how virtuous you are...

If I was closer to an office and had an easier commute, I would be all-in.

Broadcom culture is horrible, but VMware is a BU within it. VMware can maintain its own culture, and so can my team. We are keeping EPIC2 alive, even taking EPIC2 week off across our team, and just marking it as PTO.

I've had worse commutes in the past for far less money.

I'm actively looking elsewhere. Heard a lot of folks in similar roles receiving much higher awards than my team.

My suspicion is that our team was a last minute go forward offer. Like all other VMW legacy groups, Broadcom GTO is throwing away 70% of the hardware used by all teams. Those three year old servers? They get scrapped.

It su-ks, but it is what it is. My guess is if you received a low RSU award like myself, start looking before Day Two layoffs hit in May.

Are the RSUs worth it to you?

Yes.

Now stop crying and get your butt in the office or prepare for termination without severance.

I’ve declined the FT offer, agree with all you mentioned there on RTO5days, culture/DEI out of windows etc, also I’m not impressed with the captain HC’s leadership style. The RSUs are nothing compared with my four years of commitment, I’d rather spend my career life elsewhere which can align with my values and mental health

The money is so nice. Even if you just stay for 5 years once your grants start stacking it’s a real windfall for individual contributors.

Nope. I'm only in it to cash in and will decide as time goes by if I want to stay long term. If you saw what happened with the stock price today and the recently announced dividends you would understand why I'm putting up and shutting up. I guess this is how HT retain people.
