Thread regarding Broadcom Corp. layoffs

What do the annual RSU grants look like?

I've joined Broadcom via VMware and was pleased with the RSU grant I received.

I'm curious what is typical for the size and cadence of annual "re-greening" grants. A few questions....

  1. Do most employees get refresh grants annually?
  2. Are the size of refresh grants determined by Broadcom/HR? or do managers have some latitude to decide who gets how many shares?
  3. Are annual grants consistent with what a new hire or newly acquired employee got on the way it? (e.g. If I got 300 shares when I joined, if I'm performing well (e.g. a "2") can I expect 300 shares every year? Or are future grants more modest after the initial very generous grant?) Or do the size of grants correlate to company performance or other edternalities?
  4. Are grants significantly larger for employees rated a "1"? Or is the 150% bonus the real reward for excellent performance?

Any conventional wisdom about RSUs that those of you who have been at Broadcom for a while can share would be greatly appreciated. We're all just trying to get oriented to this new world. Excited to now be a shareholder!

20% of your team will get 1
70% will get 2
10% will get 3

It is one of the formula.

a small increase in TC, but we lose WFH completely, have less vacations, worse benefit ...
Totally do not worth it.

P6 is cut less as it is base cut. P4 is cut less so the number will not look too ugly. P5 has the worst luck LOL

it makes sense. so for P4, should be 400k, and actually 200k.
overall, P5 is cut most heavily.

Thanks for the data in https://www.levels.fyi/companies/broadcom/salaries/software-engineer/levels/icb-6. Now I understand more on the philosophy.

Welcome RSU were supposed to be 4 years refresh amount, that should be ~ 800k for P5 and ~1200k for P6.
So for P5, > 400k is cut that is huge, and for P6, it is slightly better and ~300k is cut (due to 20% base cut * 4 years).
Well done, BC!

For welcome RSU, P5 is significantly low balled.
P6 is better, but is also low balled due to base cut and that is a permanent cut.
BC is very good at calculation.

This number makes more sense.
If it is true, P6 yearly refresh is 300k? P5 < 200k?

Do not daydream. No one jumps from FAANG to Broadcom.

Each year get $1m stock for P6? Sounds too good to be true.

Note that countries are also tiered so that will also vary things as well as the total dollar amount.

In general everyone gets a refresh yearly. Rank 3 may not get any or very little. It is a set dollar amount divided by current stock price. So not sure if you got a special "welcome" grant but L5 or Principal engineers get around 300 this year. L6 get around 1000. L2 may get 80.
Your direct manager can shift that number around 5%. So if your manager has two L5 engineers he can take 20 shares from the "slacker" and give it to his "rock star" or favorite. So 280 and 320 respectively ....this is just an example.
Rank 1 will put this same person above 400 shares.

  1. Yes, all salaried employees get grants. We don't normally get annual grants, the last set we got was two years worth, the previous grant was four years. In general, yes, Broadcom will keep your grants full.
  2. The size of the grants are based on your position, more grants for higher titles. If you get promoted, you'll get additional RSU's that year
  3. Previous grants for new hire or newly acquired has no effect on what you will receive (see #2). Since the stock price continues to go up, you probably won't get the same number of RSU's every time. What's happened in the past is that the dollar value of RSU's we are granted had gone up quite a bit, so the raw number of RSU's we got was less. However, the total dollar value of the newly granted RSU's went up a lot, it was a pretty big win.
  4. don't know. '1's are pretty rare.
